May 21, 2014

The Cameron Close Community Action Group, a Smith’s Parish neighbourhood watch group that started in September 2012, recently held its second annual KBB Clean Up Day, with approximately 80 people from that group and the Jennings Land Community Group working together to remove two truckloads of trash from Penhurst Park and the surrounding railway tracks.

According to Cameron Close Community Action Group president Shelly Riley, “The clean up effort, which was also attended by Michael Dunkley and Police Community Action Team officers, was followed by a community barbecue at the dock across from Penhurst Park, an area that we have officially adopted with the intention of working over time to keep it beautiful and free of trash and debris.

“The event also saw between 20 and 30 children, with ages ranging from 7-years-old to late teens, join in on the effort. Some of the children came from Whitney Institute, with the school principal also attending. All ages of people came out to assist us.”

“I just believe that every neighborhood, no matter how much safe you think your neighborhood is, should come together as a group and try to see if you can keep your community safe, as well as helping people who are outside of your neighborhood; that contributes to island-wide safety.”
