BPSU Observes UN World Public Service Day
The Bermuda Public Services Union [BPSU] today joins with the rest of the world to celebrate World Public Service Day, and said they will remain on the forefront of defending public service employees, and will not waiver from the position “despite calls to reduce the current size of public sector through a reduction in employment levels and privatization.”
BPSU President Jason Hayward said, “The UN General Assembly, in its resolution 57/277, designated 23rd June as Public Service Day.
“The UN Public Service Day intends to celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community; highlight the contribution of public service in the development process; recognize the work of public servants, and encourage young people to pursue careers in the public sector.
“The BPSU would like to applaud public sector workers for their commitment to providing quality public services in Bermuda. In light of several years of no pay increases and a reduction of salary, public service workers remain dedicated to ensuring and maintaining high levels of productivity and service excellence.
“The BPSU is also taking this opportunity to call on our Government and affiliates of the Bermuda Trade Union Congress to work together. It is imperative that we find ways of actively addressing challenges faced within our economy, with an aim to improve the Government’s financial position.”
“The BPSU will remain on the forefront of defending public service employees and the services they provide. We will not waiver from our position despite calls to reduce the current size of public sector through a reduction in employment levels and privatization.”
