Educational Ship ‘Virginia’ Set To Visit Bermuda

June 11, 2014

The schooner Virginia is due to arrive in Bermuda and berth in Hamilton next week [June 18], bringing a group of high school students to the island as they participate in the Shooting the Stars program.

The program’s flyer says, “Shooting the Stars is a three week program, running from June 10 through June 27, 2014, aboard the schooner Virginia for 15-17-year-old high school students, focusing on the practical application of math skills through the art and science of traditional navigation at sea.

“This full immersion program will sail from Norfolk, Virginia to Bermuda and back, covering more than 1,200 nautical miles. Participants will assist with all aspects of operating the Virginia, while taking daily classes in applied mathematics.”

“Algebra, geometry, and trigonometry will come to life as students learn how to determine the ship’s position by deduced reckoning or by using a sextant and the stars. Pre-trip homework and online classwork will help prepare students for the program and reinforce dormant math skills.

“While in Bermuda, students will explore the sites and welcome locals aboard their floating home to discuss their experiences.”

Captained by Stefan Edick, the Virginia will host an open house for the Bermuda public on June 19 from 12.00pm to 6.00pm, before departing on June 21, 2014.
