PLP To Hold Second Town Hall On Immigration
On Thursday [July 3], the PLP will be holding a second town hall meeting on the topic of immigration and Bermuda status for PRC holders at the Dalton E. Tucker Primary School.
A spokesperson said, “The Progressive Labour Party invites the public to our second town hall meeting on immigration and status for permanent residency certificate holders. This meeting will be held at the Dalton E. Tucker Primary School on Thursday, July 3 at 6:30 pm.”

The PLP added, “Recently there has been increased attention to the immigration policy in Bermuda and we feel these town hall meetings will give the public the opportunity to hear the PLP perspective and also voice their own concerns and opinions.
“We in the PLP are in favour of comprehensive immigration reform which would begin by putting a halt to any processing of current status applications for PRCs.
“Panelists for this town hall will be Shadow Immigration Minister Mr. Walton Brown, Shadow Attorney General Mr. Michael Scott, Shadow Health Minister Ms. Kim Wilson and Senator Marc Daniels.”
These meetings follow a recent Court ruling which allowed for a pathway to status for Permanent Residence Certificate [PRC] holders.
This is crazy. They don’t want immigration reform or they would have done it when in power. What they want is the OBA to say something on the subject, anything, so they can twist it and grow a divide and hate in Bermuda. 100 people showed up to your last dividing session.

“The ruling could not have been entirely unexpected. Not by the Government. They had to know that it was either going to go one way or the other. There should have been a Plan A or a Plan B. Mr. John Barritt further highlights some very key points, “There is a past here that cannot be erased or ignored.”
There are fears, worries even, over the impact opening up will have on jobs, housing, educational opportunities and, yes, politics should it include the right to vote. You remember how this played out in the past.
An open, honest parliamentary review might well assist not just in bringing people in on the issues, but in helping formulate a community consensus on a national immigration plan.
It is this front door rather than back door approach on a critical issue which may prompt people to participate with open but not empty minds.
Some will decry the method as taking too much time.
But the harder issues, the important and the difficult, are worth the investment of time.
Thanks Mr. Barritt you have made some extremely important points in regards to this issue. Those that click no, are not willing to be honest in regards to this matter. IT kills them to accept facts.

Facts like how the PLP put the clause in to begin with. If only there were records to show how many and who were granted status because of this clause before the OBA tried to block the applications. The clause was put in with a deliberate intent, and as it was put in be he PLP, it was their intent, they just didn’t want their back door to be known about and they expected to be in power longer, otherwise they would have locked it up sooner.

This can’t impact jobs (PRC’s are already employed and the PRC legislation puts them on equal footing with Bermudians in any case). It’s not going to impact housing (PRC’s can already purchase property, with some restrictions – and, even if it were to make a difference that it would be positive – given the number of properties for sale anything that increases the number of potential buyers would be a big plus), and it’s not going to impact educational opportunities (PRC’s children are already here so they’re not going to be displacing Bermudian children.
So that brings us down to the only possible concerns. The first is, who will they vote for? The party that, even today, is dumping on them? Or someone else? And the second is the one that people want to dance around. “They don’t look like us.”
Betty imagine a Bermuda without the very people you are trying to keep out of Bermuda. The very party you support would not have survived and thrived had it not been for and expat? What would the PLP be without Lois Brown Evans? You do realize, she was not born here. There are many others within your own party: past and present members that were not Bermudian by birth. Why did you embrace them, but support a policy that says others have lived, worked and contributed cannot have the same as your friends!
I encourage you to open your eyes and look around. The next time you participate in or watch any road race, triathlon, end to end walk, parade, ask how many of the volunteers or participants are not Bermudian. The next time you go to the hospital and see the volunteers, pink ladies, or the ladies that donate blood, ask how many are not Bermudian. The next time you go by The Barn take a look in and ask how many are not Bermudian. The next time we have a KBB trash clean up or marine clean up take a look around and ask how many of the people picking up our trash are not Bermudian. The next time you open the newspaper and you see that a rest home is being painted by volunteers, take a guess at how many are not Bermudan.
My non-Bermudian friends and co-workers give much more back to this country than you ever will and unlike you they do so with without complaining, and with love and not hate.

Similar story for Dr. Gordon, except that he moved here directly, and was not here as a result of his parents. Would you be arguing against PRC’s status if it meant that they wouldn’t have gotten their’s?? Actually, it was PLP who first granted rights to long-term residents. It was through the PRC legislation that these long-term residents were allowed to reside, work and own property in Bda. UBP refused to address this issue when they were in office.
Yes the PLP did address the issue with PRC’s, shamefully the UBP lacked the guts to deal with it.
Having said that the UBP where in a no win situation. By doing nothing they looked weak and cowardly, however we all know that had they enacted the PRC legislation back in say ’96 the PLP would have had people marching in the streets or worse.
The UBP would have been accused of trying to give themselves more voters blah blah blah. Basically just what the PLP are saying and doing now.
The PLP had no intention of granting anything to the LTR. The PLP were responsible for sending dozens of families home, mostly Portuguese. The people responsible for the PRC were members of the opposition, Trevor Moniz and many support groups including the Bermuda West Indian association. Many people fought for what was right and eventually the PLP had to bit the bullet.
Actually, that is incorrect. It was the UBP who were responsible for sending families, mostly Portuguese, home. That is one of the reasons why they lost the election. Remember?

Why isn’t anyone organizing a town hall meeting to dicuss the definition and fair application of Human Rights in Bermuda with emphasis on the prevention of abuse of those for personal, ideological or political gain?

They can roll hundreds of people for a simple labour dispute, even to the point of marching on the HOA yet a “town hall” meeting could get more than 110 people? I think that less people care about this issue than the opposition are letting on.
There will be one of these every few weeks until the next election. This lot is never not in campaign mode.

What we are experiencing is the democratic process and we should be glad we live in a society where it exists. We should be glad we are able to speak up and oppose stuff put forward by Government.
During the PLP era, people who spoke up and opposed them were frequently intimidated and branded as racists simply for their point of view. A very unfair practice which forced many people into silence. Not a very healthy situation at all.
We should all be glad that era is gone, which ever party we support.

waste of time….they had my support for 7 of 14 yrs. and could have created opportunities for ownership of key business that control the economy………how many supermarkets, wholesale distributers, importers, shipping lines, alternative energy suppliers, Electric Vehicle dealerships were created in 14 yrs? They even road blocked their own from moving forward. Sad how opportunity was squandered by crab in the barrel mentality. Ownership vs. employment…..tell me which is better.
Sorry everyone but I am going to use this forum to, hopefully!, clarify some of the complete nonsense that being said by politician about the recent changes to pensions:
Previously, the Government employee pension funds (not the regular social insurance fund that every employee both Gov. and non Gov. pays into) had to be topped up (additional cash added) each year for any increases to the cost of living index. This recent change means that the Minister now has the authority to suspend these annual payments in the event the country has no $. That’s it.
This is strictly a funding issue and will NOT affect what pensioners (both former Gov. employees and non Gov. employees) will receive each month.
However, the bigger issue is that the country’s pension funds (Gov. and non Gov. employee funds)are currently underfunded (not enough cash) by almost $2B which means that unless further adjustments are made to both the Gov. and non Gov. employee pension plans, if you’re somewhere in your 40′s, there will be NO money left to pay you any pension.
So all this “granny’s pension just got cut this month” in nothing more that scaremongering by the politicians to garner votes. The facts are: 1) if changes aren’t made to Bermuda’s pension plans (changing the retirement age, reducing the benefit payments, changing to defined contribution)the will be NO money left for anyone currently mid-40s or younger and 2) the funding issue was made worse when the funding on the pension plans were suspended for a year by the PLP
This issue is a problem for all of us and is a much much bigger problem than we realize or than any politicians want to acknowledge publically or risk scary off their voters.
You all have a responsibility to both yourself and future generations of Bermudians to make sure that this information is shared with everyone.

The PLP and it’s supporters have been accuse of creating hate? But I say it’s the hate that hate produce. This immigration issue would not be an issue if the former PLP government had not attempted to solve it and has gotten very little credit for it.
The Herd mentality malign our people;insult out leaders; read these blogs any day and see who is spewing hate; who is stoking the pot and then they have the nerve to turn around and express shock at the storm they have created and the whirl wind they will surely reap. I can’t get over what a powder keg Bermuda has become. I fear that the more difficult peoples financial situation becomes the more volatile things will get. People are looking for someone to blame for their problems.
