Additional Manpower To Help Clear Garbage

August 11, 2014

The Ministry of Public Works said today [Aug 11] that they have authorized overtime work and collection crews are aiming to have both Western zones and Eastern zones cleared by Wednesday of this week.

A spokesperson said, “The Ministry of Public Works would like to advise residents that collection crews are currently working to complete the scheduled garbage collection in the West End zones today and are aiming to have both Western zones and Eastern zones cleared by Wednesday this week.

“The Ministry has deployed a full crew to address the backlog and additional manpower has been obtained by personnel from the Highways section. In addition, the Ministry has authorized overtime work for tonight and tomorrow night for collection personnel.

“The Ministry also wishes to point out that the carrying capacity of the additional new trucks purchased a few years ago is approximately two thirds of the older trucks and as such more trips are needed to empty the vehicles over the course of the working day. Consequently, more new smaller trucks have not resulted in improved efficiencies.

“The Ministry apologizes for the inconvenience caused by the garbage delay and will be issuing regular updates during the week to advise residents on the status of clean-up efforts.”

  1. Onion says:

Who was it that bought the smaller trucks and left the government so broke it can’t afford overtime?

    Remind me again.

    • Terry says:

Nah dun blayme dee P.Al. P.

      I need a rum.

    • Kunta says:

They bought smaller trucks because clients were complaining that de bigger trucks had a hard time maneuvering through narrow neighbor hoods !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
      DREAMER

      • Redman says:

        @ Kunta,

Clients lol, Yeah they bought smaller trucks but many have a longer wheel base and can’t make it up those same narrow roads because of it. Dreamer is right. LOL

When the recession was gathering speed many of those same ‘clients’ complained about the PLP wasting tons of $$$$ that we would surely need, pity they didn’t listen to them innit?! lmao

      • so they could have purchased a mix huh?????????????Dreamer

        • Redman says:

They did purchase a mix but the longer wheel based ones still have to struggle to get up and turn around those narrow lanes with tight openings.

Plus all of them carry smaller loads which means that they need to travel back to the depot more often thus more time wasted in picking up trash; Dreamer.

          • LOL (Original TM*) says:

Which also needs more fuel so again whom ever got these trucks was the dreamer.

            LOL

    • Raymond Ray says:

There isn’t any doubt that the former P.L.P. Govt. erred there. The fellows I’d spoke with today as they were collecting my refuse informed me of how small these newer trucks are claiming the trucks are inadequate.
They did further informed me of why they weren’t permitted to work overtime and it’s absolutely nothing to do with the One Bermuda Alliance nor the B.I.U. and I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to the Union. It was the fault of them that had taken over the management of the facility that refused to work along with the workmen, (due to their contract agreements prior to the change of Govt.) :-(

  2. Ex PLP supporter says:

The PLP left the country broke and now expect miracles,go figure!

    • drunken ursula says:

I thought the minister took a gamble the trash would disappear

      • Kunta says:

It took them two weeks to figure this out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!LMFAO

        • Gun Slinger says:

It took the PLP voter base 14 years to figure out the PLP Government was incompetent.

  3. mr.speaker says:

They need to do CENTRAL aswell my trash has been outside since thursday night. If thats the case hire more workers

  4. Greed Killed Bermuda says:

Oh man – I wonder what else the OBA will try to blame on the PLP?

OBA – Elections was 19 months ago – kinda late to be trying to blame the PLP!

    • Onion says:

The OBA aren’t trying to blame it on the PLP. They haven’t said anything about the PLP.

Many of the commenters are pointing out that the PLP are raging hypocrites by attacking the OBA over garbage collection.

    • Navin Johnson says:

I think the PLP also cut back on the number of crews to collect trash? lets have fewer smaller trucks …..it was also probably part of their master plan to drive people out of Bermuda so we would not need big trucks because there would be fewer people….everything they did was wrong they just have memory lapses

  5. SHE-DID says:

11 men short yup…not enough TRUCKS yup…And Trucks not being servise on a regular make pick up HARDER for those hard worker that u only see on the road working RAIN -BLOW -SHINE YUP….

  6. Tricks are for Kids says:

THIS does NOT even have to be a Political issue. That’s why we are not making any progress. All this back and forth BS dragging on and on and on…Just get the trash cleared. STOP it….we have too much at stake here to be arguing over GARBAGE. ..People say they want to get this island back on track but by reading some of these comments makes me think otherwise. IF the common goal is to get our island back to what it once was then it needs to be a COLLABORATIVE effort….
    #sounnecessary

    • Onion says:

      100% agree.

      It shouldn’t be political.

This kind of thing is the Civil Service’s job and it should never involve the politicians. If the Civil Service can’t get it done reliably then outsource it.

  7. Raymond Ray says:

We thank them from the Ministry of Public Works for informing us of the latest concerning the rubbish being picked up…

  8. Ringmaster says:

This needs to be privatized now. Problems because the trucks are smaller? Then get bigger trucks, not smaller. Whoever decided smaller trucks are better should go. Dumb decision. We’ll be told next to use smaller garbage sacks so they don’t fill the smaller trucks so quickly.
    Bermuda certainly is another world.

  9. ….Surely you jest. says:

So let me see if i have this clear: The government fails to collect the trash for a week (plus); the Minister says NOTHING until a radio call-in show this morning at 745am; the trash is sitting all across the Island uncollected and there’s nothing said by the Ministry except to blame Cup Match and the rain. NOW in its first affirmative statement on the issue the government blames the PLP, smaller trucks and their capacity ???! In my neighborhood, a small truck this week would be better than NO truck !!

Are these guys for real ??! This is a shameful, petty and ridiculous statement. Message to the OBA: grow up and govern; stop saying “they made me do it”. Its wearing pretty thin and shows that you clearly are NOT the managers you claimed to be.

  10. Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

I will say it again…RAIN SUIT N RUBBER BOOTS…all co. issued…then refusal to WORK when it rains equals refusal to PAY you when it rains along with a suggestion to look for other employment because this IS a REQUIREMENT of this place of employment. So stop blaming Govt. its your brothers, cousins, fathers, aunties or sisters that work for W/E or is it the PRC’s n Filipinos causing the havoc..? huh??

  11. Toodle-oo says:

If their start time is 7.30am then why is it that a certain western parish neighborhood that is an official starting point for the given crew often doesn’t have its trash collected until 9.30/10am when there is no backlog and everything is supposedly running ‘normal’ ?

Maybe to avoid this backlog the department should have just scheduled an extra hour per day @ straight time until they were caught up . I mean , knocking off at 2.30pm WITH a 1 hour lunch break is quite nice .

I bet we’d be back to normal in a flash .

  12. somuchless says:

Throw out the politicans and start over fresh.

    • bdaboy says:

Tried that, the PLP ran the island into the ground. Bermuda once had no debt, now it’s in the hole and your saviour, ewart, is sitting pretty.

  13. Unbelievable says:

You know what….take your fri@@in’ trash to Tynes Bay if you’re going to complain. It’s why that facility is there anyway.

Or are we just so darn lazy that we just decide to complain and leave it somebody else to figure out?

    • Local Yokle says:

Gee I don’t know, maybe because we pay taxes and part of what we pay for is twice a week trash pick up?

  14. Y-Gurl says:

I think you will find the smaller trucks were ordered by the PLP and as I remember they were told then on Bernews this wasn’t going to work as smaller trucks meant more time driving back to empty which equals less pick up time, simple math that seemed to escape the “power that were”

  15. Ace girl says:

The lack of trash pick up over the long term is indeed a community health issue. However, are all of these public servants paid by the taxpayer incapable of determining how to anticipate pick ups over public holidays with trucks that are only 2/3 capacity? Please, it is not rocket science. Why is this a Ministerial problem?
Mr Rabain, you need to get some real issues to deal with. It is more than apparent you are trying desperately to make a name for yourself in the political arena. I strongly doubt your political prowess in the long term.

  16. Coffee says:

Poor OBA … Ratcheting up one failure after another . Actually back to back failures in rapid fire order ! Always willing to drag up the ghost of previous administrations whenever epic failures result from their ( the OBAs)lack of planning ! What’s really disturbing though is the huge amount of visible rats , roaming around Paget in the early hours . Who is the MP for the constituency between Manse Road and Lovers Lane ? Maybe I need to inform them as it is my civil duty .

    • Barracuda says:

      Coffee with Betty …….. BWAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

    • Kangoocar says:

What part of, ” the garbage trucks are 1/3 smaller” did you miss??? Also do I need to remind you of which government was in power at the time they were purchased and imported? ?? That blunder ( under the plp ) along with the ordering busses that are supposed to cater to wheel chair passengers, but once they arrived here ( at a much greater cost I might add) and found to be totally impractical for our roads because many bus stops are on the road with no sidewalk are achievements you plper’s should be very proud of???? Also the rats you speak of, are probably you????
Now with that said, why don’t you be honest for a change and put the blame were it really lies??? That would be, the workers and management of the public transport department!!! May I remind you that department is heavily unionized!!!!!

    • Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

Don’t worry about who the MP is, coz he’s probably sleeping when you are roaming around paget in the early hours eyeballing “rats” between manse road n lovers lane…lol

    • Dirk Gentley says:

      That’s CIVIC duty, Betty.

    • Kunta says:

@ Coffee and don’t forget de two legged RATS !!!!!!!!!!!!!
      LMFAO

  17. Really says:

Regiment should have been deployed days ago

    • Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

The Regiment!???…wheres the guys from B.A.D.!!..??

    • Triangle Drifter says:

And you think that regiment guys don’t have regular jobs that they are needed at so that they can take a few days off & go do what W&E (thats Waste & Expense) guys are supposed to be doing.

It is a BIU scam to get OT that the public has to pay for.

Imagine if Bermuda had temps that went below freezing! Heck I doubt if they would work in the 50s. A bunch of softies.

  18. ABC says:

    cons …
wen u alll nasty talkin peeps u know

2 wrongs dont make a right but 2 rights dont make a wrong

  19. James Herald says:

Indeed the OBA has tripped and perhaps stumbled a couple of times lately.

They are still light years ahead of the completely incompetent and inept PLP. That’s a party that in truly in decline. So sad for them.

Lets just make sure they never get back in to ruin us again. Once was enough.

Fortunately, DREB ran away back home. But I hear he’s coming back at the month end – early halloween I guess.

  20. Dirk Gentley says:

So, am I reading this correctly? These government employees failed to do their job to any level of the public’s satisfaction, and now we are going to pay them time and a half, for a second crack at it?

  21. Ex PLP supporter says:

Dr. Brown ruined Bermuda for all citizens. Now he is the guest speaker at a PLP function.Man,give me some of that Ganga tea!

    • James Herald says:

Oh come on ExPLP, you wouldn’t want to deny DREB his absoluetly last and final moment in the spotlight would you?

PLP is in its death throws, a sad shadow of its former greatness. DREB was the only effective leader they ever had – too bad he used it to destroy everything in his path.

When the event is done – he will return home to the USA. let him have his final moment. Rejoice yes, but let him have that time before he fades from significance permanently.

  22. Concerned Bermudian says:

Government, It was no surprise having this Cup Match Holiday as we have it every year and thus a plan should have been put in place prior to the holiday to make up for the 40% loss of collection time for that week. Reading the announcement it seems like a plan to catch up has just been put in place more than a week after the Cup Match holiday. Being able to be a good government is not about being reactive, but proactive to this very simple problem. Blaming the purchase of smaller trucks is merely a smoke screen, as a plan to catch up is or should have been simple common sense!! You have got to do better than this!!

  23. moving forward says:

Basically this is an issue of poor management not the trucks! No one is supervising these guys. The BIU have manipulated the furlough situation so all of its workers get overtime. So watch out March 2015 no one is taking furloughs! Privatise trash collection now!

  24. Truth is killin' me... says:

Milking de OT like a FAT COW yah bunch of heffas!!!

  25. Privatize trash collection without a union to dictate to the paying public is the key – make it happen Bermuda!

  26. Enough says:

This is outrageous! They wouldn’t work in the rain and took an extended holiday and now are getting paid overtime to do their job which should have been done properly in the first place??

According to the W&E schedule the trash collections were scheduled accordingly over the holiday so why have the workers decided not to do their job? Oh, to end up getting paid overtime just like they continually do. Countless times I see them working after hours to get paid overtime when the job can be done in the normal hours.

Someone needs to step up and start getting these ‘workers’ back in line and stop ripping everyone off and causing all these issues.
