Gordon: We Must Prepare For Cannabis Cases

August 21, 2014

Cannabis activist Alan Gordon says that, even with cannabis still illegal, the “ongoing spread of super-potent cannabis formulations” in Bermuda requires new protocols for King Edward emergency room [ER] staff.

Mr. Gordon says he has recently observed an influx of super-strong cannabis extracts into Bermuda, as well as increased amounts of so-called “medibles” [edible cannabis products].

The activist says that between the extracts and medibles, the ER can expect to see more cases of cannabis anxiety; for example, if a child were to unwittingly eat a cannabis brownie recklessly left within reach by an adult.

“Treatment of acute cannabis overdose is relatively simple,” said Mr. Gordon. “The public should learn how, since it is available over the counter.”

Mr. Gordon says cannabis users have the primary duty to prevent overdoses which can be highly uncomfortable, by not introducing cannabis to novices, and by making sure that edible cannabis products are prominently labelled and locked away from children.

Mr. Gordon says that users and hospital ER staff should learn ways of treating cannabis anxiety, and provided the examples below:

1. Ibuprofen – This medicine reduces the psychological effects of cannabis by blocking the nerve cells receptors to which THC and other cannabinoids attach [link].

2. Crushed black pepper – a new study released earlier this month[2] shows that smelling crushed black pepper rapidly alleviates cannabis anxiety [link].

3. Citicoline – This over the counter supplement rapidly blocks psychological effects of cannabis with a single oral dose, and is used by Colorado [USA] ERs for this purpose.

4. Acetominophen/Paracetemol [Tylenol] – This medicine partially blocks the effects of cannabis in a way similar to ibuprofen [link].

5. Pregnenolone – This drug is an inactive steroid hormone precursor, and stops over-activation of cannabinoid receptors [link].

Mr. Gordon warns Bermudians to “exercise caution when using over the counter medicines for any purpose, and to avoid putting cannabis where unaccustomed users could suffer from it.”

Interesting. He’s saying that cannabis can be harmful, and its harmful effects can be minimized using drugs manufactured by drug companies. He’s also warning against children having access to cannabis, so presumably he would not condone, for example, giving cannabis tea to a toddler.

That’s why i know a splash of cold water in the face and a little time has always worked, the key is don’t suck down the smoke like a vacuum cleaner, take your time, because herb can get scarce and costs more than gold in some cases, people tend to go a little overboard, Bermudians are known in JA and ‘Dam for this, slow down it is not a competition. Extracts and edibles are definitely stronger and the effects last longer, but just like alcohol (which can actually KILL you) you need to be responsible, unless you want to feel like hell for a little while. What this island needs warning about is the fact that binge drinking (national pass time) IS harmful to your health can have long lasting negative effects and kills over a measurable level. A review of causes of poisonings in children shows all homes can be considered death traps, batteries, cosmetics and household cleaners etc harm and kill children annually but don’t make for sensationalist headlines.

    What, no comments?

Just seeing this Alan, a very good article….thanks for posting.

Hey Alan, good work…..lack of comments probably due to the informative structure of your delivery, without the politics. Smart move M8….always remember to turn the screws slowly ;-)

    • Onion says:

Amazing since you’ve been attacking anyone who dares say that cannabis can be in any way harmful.

      • Come Correct says:

Take notice of…”overdoses which can be highly uncomfortable”, not harmful or fatal. Similar in a way to passing out from dehydration, you aren’t going to immediately die, you just need water and passing out can be an uncomfortable feeling. Nobody likes not being able to control their body. I believe overdose may be the wrong choice of word but it can be quite uncomfortable being too high especially if you don’t understand what you are experiencing.

        • Creamy says:

Ah. So it’s perfectly safe for people to drive having used cannabis, unless they are “uncomfortable”, in which case they may “pass out”. Right than.

          • Come Correct says:

Where did I say any of that? I didn’t even say you would pass out from using cannabis. I guess its ok to drive dehydrated then since that’s legal.

  3. Binky says:

    Very useful information.

It should be pointed out that these side effects can also arise from the use of some strains of cannabis available on the street. Many people are unaware of the vastly increased effects of cannabis today vs cannabis of several decades ago. Today’s cannabis is often the result of years and years of hybridisation to emphasise the content of the chemicals that cause the high. It is no longer the plant that God put on the earth as some people argue.

    • Raw Connoisseur says:

It still is the same plant god put on earth but as time goes on people have learned how to crossbreed plants create hybrid strains to get the affects of both Indica & Sativa strains and also have perfected the growing process where they can manipulate the ideal conditions to maximize the THC level. Mr. Gordon is also referring mostly to cannabis extracts (Wax, Honey, Dabs)and edibles which give you a completely different type of high that will last a lot longer compared to smoking or using a vaporizer.

Good post letting people know who are not aware of the effects and how to reduce them is good. Pointing out over the counter drug can reduce the effects can help many with not having an unnecessary trip to the ER. Funny someone post the super hybridization myth. While high quality weed is more available. The strength increases are more from proper picking times, handling , the distribution methods. We know now some strains have as little as a few days once it reaches maturity to be pick ” trichomes” start to degrade . Strains such as Thai and Malawi and many others were the wolves that were used to give teeth to today’s strains. The growing hybridization were more geared to be fast and less fickle about growing conditions.Flavours, Yield and time to market is the more important to most growers. I was smoking stuff that knocked people to their knees back in the 70′s. It’s more common now, but it was always present like that little old lady that grew tomatoes bigger than anyone else.Reality it is the same old plant god put on the earth. You don’t cross Chihuahuas with Chihuahuas and get Great Danes. There’s wolves in the bloodline.

  5. Eldon Orr says:

Nonsense and lack of common sense! I knew a child years ago that snuck into his parents stash and ate 2 loaded brownies– adult dose was one– and he was freaking out, but his mom sat down with him under the stars, held him and explained what was going on and he was fine. You don’t need to go to the emergency room for cannabis ingestation!

    • Dusty says:

You don’t need to but that doesn’t mean that someone some idiot won’t.

  6. long time says:

cure for cannabis overdose is food and water lol am i wrong

    • born Bermudain says:

Get high eat food highs gone time to smoke again

  7. aceboy says:

Basically….take an aspirin. You’ll be fine.

In Amsterdam they give the tourists who wig out because they are not used to it valium. Buddy of mine worked over there and was friends with some EMTs.

  8. born Bermudain says:

You can not over dose on herb. This guy says anything

  9. Alan, prescription drugs will out right kill you,or produce man breasts, some of the warnings are outright ludicrous …no no no diabolical if taking this drug procuces man breasts shortness of breath, internal bleeding ,brain hemorrage or death you should stop taking this prescription drug immediately ,and consult a physician immediatly….(post haste?).

  10. Marijuanna is good…it is good for you…unless you buy from people who put addictive additives innit,or that synthetic man made immitation…in that case yeah…you act strange…..but marijuanna in unadulterated form is outstanding!Quite lovely really!

  11. Alex says:

It’s a little disingenuous to say that strains are stronger now that before. There was always and will always be an array of strains with all sorts of THC/CBD etc. Similar to the alcohol market.

Also it’s a little arrogant to suggest that the last 20 years of cross breeding of strains has surpassed the previous 5000 years of cultivation in India, Africa and Asia. They used this for medicine and pleasure for this whole time, I’d say they’ve got a pretty good handle on it!
