Man Pleads Guilty: Riding JetSki While Impaired

September 8, 2014

A 29 year old man appeared in Magistrates Court today [Sept 8] where he pleaded guilty to driving a jetski whilst impaired in the Mangrove Bay area on 3rd August 2014, the date of the Non-Mariners Race.

Police evidence as read out to Magistrate Juan Wolffe was that Marine Police had seen Kinte Smith on a jetski in an area where there were many swimmers, and the jetski left that area, with the police saying he was reaching an increased speed, so police sought to stop the jetski.

Mr Smith was accosted and, on observing him, Police saw that he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. On questioning at the scene, Mr Smith told Police that he had consumed “half a bottle of Scotch”. Mr Smith was arrested and conveyed to Hamilton Police Station.

Magistrate Wollfe queried “half a bottle?” Using his hands, Mr Smith indicated to the Magistrate that the bottle was about the size of a flask.

Magistrate Wolffe fined Mr Smith $1,000 with 90 days to be served in default.

  2. We Are Not Amused! says:

  3. family first says:

What about the other people that operate boats every year and are full hot? This is goose vs gander. He did nothing anyone else was doing that day. 1000$ and 90 days default. Pleeeaaaasssseeeee give me a bloody break and go catch a rapist, child molester or a thief!

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

Drunk on the water is the same as being drunk driving a car or scooter as well!!

He also should have had his license suspended!! They NEVER seem to learn – only the “hard way”!!

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

@family first…. What would happen if this drunk clown on the jetski had run over a swimmer and that swimmer “drowned” or was very seriously injured!! And what if that “swimmer” was a member of your family???

Still think it’s NO big deal???

    • Micro says:

He got caught, that’s the difference. If the rest were stopped on suspicion and found to be under the influence I’m sure they’d have to face the music as well.

  4. Bill says:

If it was the same guy that passed our raft up in Mangrove Bay they should have impounded his ski. He was towing a young female passenger through the restricted area to a beach to drop her off. After that he went wide open and raced straight though all the boats and swimmers ignoring marine regulations (5 knot no wake) and was completely irresponsible and ignorant. He doesn’t deserve to be on the water. And people wonder why the jet skis are banned from that area, cause of stupid people like that. Its a shame how some people can spoil the fun for other responsible jet skis owners.
