Yushae Simmons To Compete In China

September 13, 2014

Yushae SimmonsYushae Simmons [pictured] will be travelling to China to compete in the Boccia World Championships later this month, marking the first time Bermuda has been represented at this high level of competition in the Paralympic sport of Boccia.

Ms. Simmons, 20, learned to play Boccia through the WindReach Adaptive Sports Program and has been competing internationally for just over 2 years.

She has performed extremely well in this short time, moving up the world rankings and gaining valuable experience. This is her fifth and by far her biggest international competition.

Ms. Simmons is training six days a week in preparation and is looking forward to the challenge. Her ultimate goal is to qualify for the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games and the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Windreach’s Adaptive Sports Coordinator and Bermuda Boccia Coach Troy Farnsworth stated “This is a wonderful opportunity for Yushae who has worked really hard to qualify for this tournament.

“During the past two years I have watched Yushae’s game improve tremendously and there is really no limit as to how far she can go with Boccia in the future”.

The Bermuda Paralympic Association said, “Boccia is a Paralympic Sport played by athletes who require a wheelchair because of a physical disability.

“It is a precision, highly skilled sport where the object of the game is to propel your coloured balls as close to the white [jack ball] as possible. It requires intense concentration, focus and strategy. Visit bisfed.com for more information.”

Ms. Simmons will be depart for Beijing, China on Wednesday 19th September, return on 29th September, and will be travelling with Troy Farnsworth [coach] and her mother Ashanti.
