City: Use Caution As Some Lights Not Working
The Corporation of Hamilton said they want to “urge motorist and pedestrians to use precaution when traveling throughout the city as a number of traffic lights are not in service or to full service following the effects of Hurricane Gonzalo.
The City said the “strategy for the restoration process has been to begin with restoring areas which aids the flow of traffic throughout the city. Service or partial service has been restored to traffic lights in the following areas, caution is advised as some lamp heads are still missing:
- Junction of Cedar Avenue and Dundonald Street
- Junction of Spurling Hill
- Junction of Church Street and Par-la -Ville Road
- Junction of Front Street, Pitts Bay Road, Bermudiana Road and Par -la -Ville Road
“Restoration continues in the following areas where traffic is to treat the intersection as a four way stop, extreme caution is advised:
- Junction of Church Street and Burnaby Street
- Junction of Victoria and Court Street
- Pedestrian crossing on Queen Street and Church Street
- Pedestrian crossing on Church Street [adjacent to City Hall Car Park]
- Pedestrian crossing on Church Street [adjacent to Hamilton Bus Terminal]
“Until full service is restored we ask that motorists reduce their speed and stop at all pedestrian crossings when pedestrian have indicated they are going to cross the road. Additionally we ask that motorists treat all intersection s without operational traffic lights as four way stops. This means the first vehicle to come to a complete stop at the stop line has the right of way.
“Please note these are guidelines and ideals, and that any number of circumstances may change how traffic actually flows in a given situation. In any case, drive purposefully and defensively.”
“The Corporation of Hamilton is working diligently on the present issues and will update the public once the traffic lights system has returned to full service.”

Almost a week later…
Week too late!
I had to laugh when they put up the signs of crossed out traffic lights on the traffic light poles as if we couldn’t see the light were out…SMH. Then later they put up stops signs when they should have gone up right away.
Before the advent of traffic lights in Hamilton, traffic travelling east or west had the right of way over traffic travelling north or south. However, I believe that today’s suggestion of using a system of four-way stops is a much safer option – if enforced.
Yes, but a lot of people seem to have no idea of how to deal with a 4-way stop.
I see cars going 4 and 5 at a time after the other from the same stop sign!!!
And in other spots with temporary stop signs, cars are ignoring the signs as well as the pedestrians waiting to cross!!
