Day 3 Bermuda Optimist Open Championship
On the third day of the Bermuda Optimist Open Championship, the Race Committee completed 4 races. Offshore of Fort St Catherine had provided confused seas and rolling waves earlier in the regatta but today saw calmer conditions. Each race day has had a different Bermuda sailor leading the fleet around the course.
Today it was Tayte Stefaniuk who took control and had a stellar day. He won the first three races and placed 3rd in the fourth. He has now jumped to 2nd overall just 4 points out of first. Seven points behind him is last year’s champion Jack Corbett from New Jersey and only one point behind him is Adam Larson.
However, the top spot is still being held by Carmen Cowles from Larchmont, NY. Carmen has sailed consistently throughout the regatta with the majority of her races in the top three. The lead she has established means that even if she chose not to race tomorrow, she will be this year’s top female sailor.
Battling it out for the top Jr sailor [born in or after 2003] tomorrow is Sofia Segalla from Stamford, CT and Bermuda sailor Sebastian Kempe. Sofia is 14th overall with Sebastian in 17th.
Tomorrow will also see the end of the Bermuda National Championship. Only one point separates the top three sailors. Currently in first is Adam Larson on 19 points tied with him is Tayte Stefaniuk and Campbell Patton is in third with 20 points. The two races tomorrow could make all the difference in determining this year’s National Champion.
Looking solid for the top Bermuda female is Camille Chin-Gurret and currently holding the top Bermuda Jr sailor is Sebastian Kempe,
Prinicipal Race Officer Martin Siese hopes to hold the final two races tomorrow in St George’s Harbour should the weather and conditions cooperate. Prizegiving will follow at the St George’s Dinghy and Sports Club.
