Student Seeks Aid For Sri Lanka Volunteer Trip

November 6, 2014

A young Bermuda woman working on a tertiary education in the United Kingdom to become a psychologist is asking for the public’s assistance in funding a trip to Sri Lanka for a psychology and special needs placement.

Calshae Iris, a young mother of one, has turned to crowd-funding website GoFundMe to raise the £1,000 needed to make the volunteer trip.

Ms. Iris said, “I am finally here, on my own. I’ve worked extremely hard, and at 24 I feel like I am defeating the stereotype for all young mothers that feel like they will never be able to truly follow their dreams.”

Sri Lanka SL Volunteers Summer 2013 overview:

“One day whilst going through my school email I stumbled upon a career and volunteering opportunity for all psychology students and graduates in the UK. I completed the application but doubted myself the whole time because I felt that it was very unlikely that I would be selected for an opportunity so major.

“Surprisingly, a representative from the committee reached out to me for a phone interview, and during the interview she mentioned she had never heard of the country of Bermuda. However to my surprise, three days later I received an email congratulating me for being successfully chosen as a candidate to join a team of volunteers traveling to Sri Lanka for a psychology and special needs placement.

“However, the volunteering placement is self-funded and, being a young self sufficient student and mother, I was left to brainstorm ideas in which I can raise funds, so I’ve created a GoFundMe page.

“This opportunity is huge as I will possibly be the first Bermudian joining this organization.”
