November 9, 2014

This week Warwick Academy welcomed back alumna and newly crowned XTERRA world champion Flora Duffy, who came to spend the morning with students, along with her boyfriend Dan Hugo who is a world class triathlete from South Africa.

A school spokesperson said, :She inspired all our students in Assembly and then she and Dan spent a special time with our “star” athletes in a question and answer hour. Congratulations Flora, we are very proud of you and thank you for spending time with us.”

Duffy won the XTERRA World Championship in Hawaii last month, which followed a first class season from the two-time Olympian, who also claimed XTERRA titles in Utah, South Africa, Nevada, Australia and Alabama.

Speaking after she claimed the world title, Ms Duffy said, “I’ve dreamed of being a world champion since I was 8-years-old, so to make that dream a reality today is pretty special.

“Particularly coming from Bermuda; we don’t – I think I’m the first world champion – hence why I grabbed the flag and just had so much, I guess, Bermudian pride.

“It means a lot to me to do this from Bermuda, we’re a small little country and I love to represent them and put them on the map. So it’s a huge day for me.”

Be nice if it was more than just the ‘star’ athletes that could have been in the Q&A. They will always get a look in. There are so many kids here who are not ‘star’ quality but may have the talent – they should be encouraged too … that to me is the secret of a good school and community.
