Hamilton Insurance Launches Community Giving

December 9, 2014

Hamilton Insurance Group, the Bermuda-based holding company for property casualty reinsurer Hamilton Re and property casualty insurer Hamilton USA, has established a Community Giving Committee to oversee the organization’s philanthropic activity in Bermuda.

Hamilton, which was established in December 2013 by Brian Duperreault and a group of investors, also announced that to acknowledge its first year of operation, it was donating funds to nine Bermuda registered charities and establishing a scholarship at the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies [BFIS].

“We take our responsibility to be good corporate citizens seriously,” said Hamilton CEO Brian Duperreault. “We know that the health and wellbeing of the communities in which we do business have a direct impact on our ability to hire local talent and to sustain our operations.

“I am grateful to the employees of Hamilton’s operations in Bermuda who are giving of their time and expertise to make sure that our philanthropic activity makes a meaningful difference.”

Vanessa Hardy Pickering, Group Controller and Chairperson of the Community Giving Committee, said that committee members have been meeting for the last few months to establish their area of focus and criteria for giving, become acquainted with Bermuda’s Third Sector, and decide where to allocate funds in recognition of the company’s first year of operation.

Recipients of funding

“We believe that one of the most efficient and effective ways to provide our support is through funding to non-profit organizations who can demonstrate that they are making a difference to the health and well-being of Bermuda’s families,” said Mrs. Hardy Pickering.

“In support of that objective, we’ve established criteria for organizations applying for funding and a quarterly schedule for considering applications. Underpinning the criteria is a desire to fund initiatives that make bold and creative use of technology, one of Hamilton Insurance Group’s key areas of focus.

“While the Community Giving Committee is a new initiative of Hamilton Insurance Group, we are pleased to be able to allocate some funding as we close out 2014. We looked at three areas where Bermuda charities are providing services and programmes that benefit the Island’s families, in general, and young people, in particular. These areas are Education, Social/Youth/Family, and Arts/Sports.”

Mrs. Hardy Pickering said that after meeting with several organizations and researching others, the Committee was pleased to provide funding to the following charities:

  • Bermuda Sloop Foundation – in support of the experiential learning provided to Bermuda school students
  • Chain Reaction – in support of the organization’s anti bullying initiative
  • The Family Centre – in support of the Youth Leadership Academy operated in North Hamilton
  • Greenrock – in support of the Eco Schools programme
  • Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation – in support of the Creative Minds arts programme
  • The Menuhin Foundation – in support of stringed instruments instruction in Bermuda’s schools
  • Raleigh International [Bermuda] – in support of the experiential learning provided to young Bermudians overseas
  • TROIKA Bermuda – in support of the Bermuda Glee musical theatre programme
  • YouthNet – in support of the organization’s mentoring programme

BFIS scholarship

Mrs. Hardy Pickering said that the scholarship established with the Bermuda Foundation of Insurance Studies [BFIS] for the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 academic years has a value of up to $25,000 per year and represents Hamilton’s commitment to enabling young Bermudians to succeed in the Island’s re/insurance industry.

“Ebony Brockington, who is an Underwriting Assistant at Hamilton Re, came to us after studying on a BFIS scholarship. Ebony is one of many talented young Bermudians who have benefited from this important programme, and we are delighted to be able to establish an award that will provide access to similar opportunities for employment in Bermuda’s insurance and reinsurance sector.”

Mrs. Hardy Pickering noted that information about how to apply for funding from Hamilton Insurance Group’s Community Giving Committee, as well as an application form, may be found at www.hamiltongroup.com on the Community Giving page.
