Public Welcome To Attend Customs Open House
The Ministry of National Security advised that the Department of Customs will recognise International Customs Day on Monday [Jan 26] and members of the public are encouraged to attend an Open House from 10.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m.
The theme of this year’s Customs Day is “Coordinated Border Management: An inclusive approach to including stakeholders”, and in addition to the Open House, a number of events have been planned to highlight the occasion including a church service on Sunday, Jan. 25, at 11.00 a.m. at the St. Paul’s A.M.E. Church, and a run – walk – cycle event on Wednesday Jan. 29.
Monday’s Open House will be held at the No. 6 Cruise Ship Terminal – Lower Level, Front Street, where there will be a series of displays and demonstrations. Members of the public will have an opportunity to interact with Customs Officers and ask any questions they may have.
On Wednesday, Jan. 28 there will be a run-walk-cycle event beginning at 9.00 a.m. The race starts at Clearwater Beach parking lot and ends at the L.F. Wade International Airport Cargo Shed. So far, more than 60 individuals will be taking part, including personnel from the Bermuda Regiment, Bermuda Fire Services, Bermuda Police Service, The Department of Corrections and US Customs & Border Protection Officers. Residents are encouraged to participate.
Premier Michael Dunkley,, who will be on hand next Monday at the Customs event, said, “Next week the public will have an opportunity to learn more about what Customs Officers do, as well learn more about the concept of Coordinated Border Management [CBM].
“A coordinated approach by border control agencies resides at the heart of the CBM concept, in the context of seeking greater efficiencies in managing trade and travel flows, while maintaining a balance with security requirements.
“Our Officers provide a critical service in protecting our borders and in that regard, I want to encourage the public’s support of International Customs Day and the related activities.”
Collector of Customs, Lucinda Pearman said, “The Customs Department, working under the Ministry of National Security, continues to play an important role in the Bermuda economy and our mission is to promote compliance with Bermuda’s customs laws through quality service and responsible enforcement, thereby contributing to the economic and social stability of our community.
“Our staff is responsible for facilitating trade, assessing and collecting revenue and interdicting drugs and other contraband. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage the public to come to our open day and learn more about who we are and what we do.”
