Robert Watson Replaces Philip Micallef At RA

January 7, 2015

The Regulatory Authority of Bermuda has a new chief executive with Robert Watson, who was the president and CEO of SaskPower, the principal electrical utility in Saskatchewan, Canada, replacing Philip Micallef, who returned to Malta in September, as of Monday, 5 January.

The Chairman of the Regulatory Authority’s Commission, Carl Musson, said: “It was a difficult search, but we think we have found the right man for the job in Robert Watson.

“I welcome him to Bermuda, and look forward to great things from his leadership of the Authority. He joins us at a critical time, as we prepare to take over regulation of the Island’s energy sector. His experience in the energy sector in Saskatchewan will help us enormously.”

Before joining the Bermuda Regulatory Authority, Mr. Watson served as president and CEO of SaskPower beginning in 2010, and as president and CEO of SaskTel beginning in 2004. Prior to those appointments, he held several senior executive positions in the Canadian communications industry.

Mr. Watson is a Ryerson University graduate in electrical technologies. He has attended the international executive development program at the INSEAD Centre [an international graduate business school] in Fontainebleau, France, as well as the executive management program at Ashridge Business School in the United Kingdom. He holds an ICD.D designation from the Canadian Institute of Corporate Directors, which commits him to a minimum period of further education every year.

Mr. Watson currently serves as a Board Member for Tbaytel [formerly the Thunder Bay Telephone Company] and on the Advisory Board of Canadian technology manufacturer StarTech.

He is a recipient of the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal, serves on the Prostate Cancer Canada Board and on the board of One Life Makes a Difference.
