Time Served For Woman Who Stole Sandwich
After being convicted late last year of stealing a $5.25 cheese sandwich from a gas station, a 26-year-old woman was today [Feb 13] released from jail when she appeared in Magistrates Court.
Trimiea Roland was back before Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo to be sentenced as a result of that earlier conviction.
During her first appearance last year, the Court heard that Ms Roland had ordered a cheese sandwich, and when told that it would cost $5.25, Ms Roland said “Used to be $4.00. Now it’s $5.25″ and refused to take the sandwich and left.
She returned shortly after asking: “Where’s my f***** sandwich,” the staff gave her the previously rejected sandwich and Ms Roland took the sandwich. She said ”I ain’t paying for s***” and left without paying.
Police were called and found Ms Roland at a nearby bus stop in the process of consuming the cheese sandwich.
The Court heard that in the process of police arresting her, Ms Roland kicked a policeman and had to be wrestled to the ground, and she was subsequently convicted of assaulting a police officer as well as the theft.
Speaking in Court today, the Magistrate said that her completely different attitude now contrasted with her attitude in December. The Magistrate also noted that she had spent Christmas and New Years in jail.
Ms Roland agreed and said that she had learned a lot from the jail time that she had served whilst on remand awaiting various pre-sentencing reports and sentencing.
Asked what she wanted, Ms Roland told the Magistrate that she wanted to be released from jail. The Magistrate granted her request and sentenced Ms Roland to time already served, which was approximately two months.
As Ms Roland was being taken to be processed out, she appeared to turn and blow a kiss at the Magistrate.

That’s one expensive sandwich!!!
yes for the taxpayer. They could have made her work at the gas station (without pay) as part of her punishment – cleaning the kitchen etc
Do you really think she would have complied with her attitude ?
Speak to a few people who have received community service sentences and find out just what a joke they are.
Now that’s funny Raymond but……
She has eaten well, washed and clothed everyday, roof over her head, no bills to pay…….
Um ordering a sandwich…………
Well, all I can say is that I hope she was SERIOUSLY warned that any repetition of the offence would land her back inside, and I hope she heeds any such warning…..
The only people who paid for that sandwich is the taxpayers. How much to lock her up for a month and some change for a $5.25 cent sandwich?
It would have been cheaper for us to just pay the $5.25 to the gas station.
That line of thought seems to be becoming very pervasive lately and I suppose , in a way , that at first blush it makes sense.
But what if instead of stealing a sandwich she broke into your , or anyone else’s house , and stole goods to the value of $5.25 ?
Where do we draw the line in the sand ?
If people are allowed to keep pushing the boundaries in terms of the value of their crime where does it stop ?
I see your point but I do think that there should be room for a judge to exercise discretion for cases like this one. Her time served certainly wasn’t long enough to “teach her a lesson”. It was just money wasted in this instance.
Disagree truth.
The lady needs help.
Hopefully she got some; and yes at out expense.
She should be banned from the gas station and should have washed car window until she paid for that cheese sandwich plus interest!
If you read the story, there was significantly more to it than stealing a sandwich.
Google her name.
This young lady definitely needs some help and I pray that she gets it.
Sooner rather than later, I might add.
Wow. I just Googled her. She has issues that go back years. She definitely needs help.
And there’s more. So much for “all she needed was a warning”.
Smh she must have ordered extra cheese ! Cause somebody is mice-ing ! I thought u had to pay when u order food at that place before it gets cooked ?? Well she didn’t have to pay for it in jail ! I guess when she gets hungry again she’ll order another sandwich n ask where’s the beef !??!
It was pointless for her to go to jail in the first place. All she needed was a warning and to pay back the money.
This girl just cannot stay out of trouble!
