February 7, 2015

The Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre has highlighted the need for careful handling and correct stowage of Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon [EPIRB] devices after a false alert was received on Tuesday [Feb 3] from a local fishing vessel.

A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “On February 3rd, RCC Bermuda receives an EPIRB Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon alert from a Bermuda registered Fishing Vessel.

“The owner of the Fishing Vessel “Sheer Luck” is contacted and the gentleman advises that the beacon activated whilst being repositioned onboard his vessel. Meanwhile the USCG, RCC Norfolk, calls RCC Bermuda to enquire as to the status of the beacon alert. This highlights the need for careful handling and correct stowage of these sensitive devices.”
