CARPHA Reps To Visit Bermuda This Week
Representatives from the Caribbean Public Health Agency [CARPHA] will be in Bermuda from March 24 – March 27 to conduct data analysis training for the STEPS to a Well Bermuda survey.
“The Ministry of Health, Seniors and Environment initiated the survey in November 2013 seeking to gather critical information on the population’s health status. The STEPS survey combined self-reported data and objective measurements to determine the prevalence of risk factors for diabetes, heart disease and cancer in Bermuda’s population,” a spokesperson said.
“Chronic diseases, such as these are the leading causes of death in Bermuda and account for a large portion of the cost of the healthcare system. Fortunately, many of these diseases are preventable and respond well to lifestyle changes, but effective action to prevent and control them depends on timely access to accurate and reliable information about the prevalence of these diseases and their associated risk factors.
“Following the conclusion of the data collection phase of the STEPS to a Well Bermuda chronic disease risk factor survey in December 2014, the Ministry of Health, Seniors and Environment will commence the data analysis phase of the project.
“The results of this study will provide many benefits to residents in Bermuda by allowing information based decisions to be made on health services planning, public health priorities, predicting future caseloads of chronic diseases and implementing, monitoring and evaluation of population wide interventions. The data from the STEPS survey will provide information for immediate public health action.”
