Startup Weekend Set To Get Underway Today
[Written by BEDC Chairman Nick Kempe]
Sometimes it is frustrating when I hear people say that not enough is done to promote and support entrepreneurship in Bermuda.
I have seen first-hand just how enthusiastically the team at the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation [BEDC] and its partners work to foster an environment conducive to business creation on our island.
Just this year, we have been nominated for two awards for our Global Entrepreneurship Week from the worldwide parent organization, we helped bring the Streetwise MBA program outside of the United States for the first time, we have incorporated the Kaufman Institute’s ICE House Curriculum into our community education courses and this Friday we are proud to introduce the Startup Weekend to Bermuda sponsored in part by Inspire e-Business.
Startup Weekend is an awesome incubator for business talent and entrepreneurial spirit. If you have not yet cleared your calendar and signed up, here are the top reasons why you should:
- Sponsored. That’s right, it’s free! We felt so strongly that people should get to participate that we dug around in the couches at the office so that you wouldn’t have to. Times are tough, but this decision is easy.
- Condensed. This program creates an entrepreneurial eco-system in one room on one weekend.
- Investment. A team of talented individuals could help develop YOUR idea to the point of attracting investors.
- Experience. This is an educational opportunity like no other. Nothing beats hands on learning.
The team of entrepreneurs working to bring this event together, which include Nhuri Bashir, Coral Wells and Courtney Bushner, have shared the details of the event: “Startup Weekend takes place at Mount Saint Agnes from March 6-8. This is a great opportunity for you to try your hand at business planning, spend a focused weekend being part of a global network of passionate leaders and entrepreneurs, and have the experience of a lifetime! Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served the entire weekend.
Startup Weekend is a globally recognized, non-profit, community-building event that is open to entrepreneurs of different backgrounds. Throughout the dynamic and high-energy weekend, participants form teams and develop their respective business ideas into a solid business plan for a company or project. It is a technology-focused three-day frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation.
Coaches, most of whom are local entrepreneurs in their own right, are available to the participants throughout the weekend to assist you as you test your idea. The event culminates with presentations to an audience of judges and potential investors who will present prizes to first, second and third place teams.”
To sign up, please log on to www.inspireebusiness.bm. The event starts at 6.30pm on Friday, March 6th.
