Startup Weekend To Help Form New Businesses

February 23, 2017

Bermuda’s fourth Startup Weekend is taking place on February 24th – 26th at the Bermuda High School in Hamilton, and over the course of the weekend, teams will take innovative business ideas from concept to launch.

“Startup Weekend is a globally recognized, non-profit, community-building event that is open to entrepreneurs of different backgrounds,” a spokesperson said.

“Throughout the dynamic and high-energy weekend, participants form teams and develop their respective business idea into a solid business plan for a company or project.

“Then it is a technology-focused three-day frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. Coaches, most of whom are local entrepreneurs in their own right, are available throughout the weekend to assist the participants as they test their ideas.

“The event culminates with presentations to an audience of judges and potential investors who will present prizes to first, second and third place teams.

“Prizes for the Bermuda winning teams have graciously been donated by local companies and entrepreneurs who support the local entrepreneurial ecosystem including: Digicel, Mediaville, DHL, Cox Hallet Wilkinson Limited, K.I.M’s List, SociaLee Consulting and Deep Blue Communications.”

This fourth Start-Up Weekend has been sponsored by the Department of Ecommerce, Digicel Business, Deloitte, Babson College, Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative of Bermuda and Connectech, with support from Barrits, Freisenbruch Meyer Group and Sticker Giant.

“The Department of E-Commerce believes that Startup Weekend enhances Bermuda’s entrepreneurial environment,” said Dr. Marisa Stones, Director of E-Commerce, Ministry of Economic Development.

“The opportunity recognition, problem solving and business planning that are key to the weekend are important first steps for all entrepreneurs.

“Additionally, as the participants form teams around the business ideas, entrepreneurs are able to experience how a strong multi-functional team can help businesses develop and grow exponentially. We look forward to seeing the innovative results of the coming weekend’s work.”

Brett Henshilwood, Risk Advisory Partner at Deloitte in Bermuda, commented: “At Deloitte, we are thrilled to sponsor Startup Weekend since its origination in Bermuda in 2012. This event supports Deloitte’s commitment to our community, education, local innovation and our youth.

“Startup Weekend has been a great starting point for entrepreneurs to gain knowledge, ask questions, build their networks and talk to people who can share insights regarding developments in technology.”

“Get your Startup Weekend Bermuda tickets today! The $75 fee covers great local food for the entire weekend, access to exclusive resources from event sponsors, and free t-shirts,” a spokesperson added.
