America’s Cup Series Event In Italy Cancelled

April 11, 2015

Following the withdrawal of the Italian Team Luna Rossa, the America’s Cup World Series regatta — previously scheduled to be held in Italy in June of this year — has been cancelled.

The Italian team, which is backed by the Prada fashion house, confirmed earlier this month that they will withdraw in protest over rule changes which involve using a smaller boat.

A statement from the organisers said, “The first America’s Cup World Series regatta is confirmed for Portsmouth, England, with racing on July 25-26.

“The full event in Portsmouth runs from July 23 through July 26, with a wide variety of activities scheduled in the home port of the British challenger, Ben Ainslie Racing.

“The event in Cagliari, Italy, previously scheduled for June, has now been cancelled following the announcement that Luna Rossa, the Italian challenger, has withdrawn from the America’s Cup.”

The America’s Cup World Series in 2015 will now consist of the following events:

  • Portsmouth, Great Britain – July 23-26, 2015
  • Gothenburg, Sweden – August 28-30, 2015
  • Hamilton, Bermuda – October 16-18, 2015

It’s their loss, not ours :-(

Hardly surprising is it? The great news that was reported internationally yesterday is that Russell Coutts is expecting 6 or 7 entries with at least one or two teams being from Asia! So things are looking very positive. Does anyone really think the Organisers would have put forward changes as they did last week if the overall outcome didn’t enhance the whole enterprise?

The rule changes will be better for Bermuda once the dust settles.

  7. Triangle Drifter says:

The Italians pulled out. Any surprises that the AC would cancel events scheduled to be held in Italy?

  8. Rhonnie aka BlueFamiliar says:

It was pretty much a given that if the team pulled the country would lose the race. It was a choice Luna Rossa made.

  9. Skink says:

I don’t get it….. they have a boat… they want to race… why wouldn’t they race? Italians have too much pride… because this is a matter of their pride and nothing else. Everyone in their country still wants a race, so they should give the people what they want…. who cares if their boat is 10 ft bigger… put a bigger sail on that…. next americas cup they can change it… they’re acting like some 5 year old party poopers

    • Just B-cause says:

They withdrew because the boat they designed is too big for the cup. They changed the size of the boats to better fit the racing conditions here. They couldnt spend millions more on a new boat
