Bermuda’s Top 50 Twitter List For March
[Written by Don Burgess]
The past month saw two live-stream video apps for Twitter released. The first out of the gate was Meerkat, but that was usurped by Periscope at the end of the month. Twitter paid a reported $100 million for Periscope and is throwing its weight behind it to make it successful.
I tested both apps and had more success with Periscope. I shot several videos of our lovely island from the deck of my house, one of which had 40 people watch live, even though I gave no prior notice that I was broadcasting it. People who like what they are seeing can give you ‘hearts” by tapping on the screen. They can also make comments and ask questions while the video is streaming.
Afterwards, the stream is saved and people can replay it.
If there are people you want to follow, you can choose to receive notifications when they start to broadcast.
There are a lot of junk videos floating around — the usual assortment of cats, people eating, and ranting, but there were also conferences and meetings shown.
Unfortunately, the ugly side of the Net raised its ugly head in the form of mean comments and, in the case of two teen girls who were using it, inappropriate comments.
In Bermuda, there are a lot of practical applications for it. The protest at the Cabinet Office could have been broadcast live or any sporting event could be shown so that people overseas can watch.
Periscope is currently only available for IOS, but should be ready for Android in the near future. If you download it, feel free to follow me on Periscope @DonBermuda.
Turning to the Bermuda Top 50 Twitter List, there was one change in the top 10 as the Bermuda Tourism Authority slipped past fashion designer Shiona Turini for the number 10 spot. Otherwise the top spots all remained the same with FOX commentator and former WWE champ John Layfield still has a commanding lead for #1 – so much so that if the rest of the top 50’s followers were combined, they would have less than he does.
Webster Butler leaped into the Top 50 at number 29 with 5,567 followers. The Bermuda Cricket Board’s account continues to grow and moved from number 50 to 45, surpassing the VCricket’s followers.
The numbers for this report was taken on March 27-28.
If you have a Twitter following of more than 2,300 and were not on this list, please e-mail Don Burgess at dburgesspb@gmail.com.
