The latest “First Monday” episode from A.M. Best TV focuses on the wave of mergers and acquisitions, with A.M. Best Vice President Robert DeRose and Assistant Vice President William Pargeans exploring motivations of re/insurers across the major sectors to seek out mergers and acquisitions.
“A.M. Best has seen a definite increase in M&A activity in the property/casualty market,” said Mr. DeRose. “However, the headlines appear to be focused on reinsurance, particularly in Bermuda. What is driving the need for consolidation is the excess capacity in the reinsurance space, which reinsurers recognize.”
Recent mergers involving Bermuda re/insurers include the deals between Endurance and Montpelier [link], XL and Catlin [link], RenaissanceRe and Platinum Re [link] and Axis and PartnerRe [link].
