Bermuda Scouts Hold Island Wide Jamboree
This past weekend saw the Bermuda Scout Association celebrate their annual island wide jamboree.
Approximately 50 boy scouts between the ages of 7-16, participated in a weekend long camp on Paget Island. The scouts were occupied with activities that included participating in badge work, zip lining, tracking, fishing, and exploring Fort Cunningham.
The Island Jamboree is the only event that brings together the scouting community as all other camping trips are arranged by each scouting unit. Supervised by 13 leaders, the scouts were transported to Paget Island on Friday evening and returned on Sunday afternoon.
This year’s Jamboree camp is particularly special, as 6 scouts and 4 adults will attend the World Jamboree in Japan this summer. 40,000 members of the world wide scouting community will be in attendance.
Chief Commissioner of the Bermuda Scout Association, Geoff Rothwell remarked, “The camp was a huge success. Everyone had a great time. The campfire and hot chocolate were particularly popular.”
The success of the jamboree follows hot on the heels of two Bermudian scout leaders receiving top scouting awards. Linda Tailford and Tim Smith were each awarded the ‘Silver Acorn Award’.
This award, considered the second highest award in scouting, marks not less than 20 years of distinguished service to the scouting organization. Linda Tailford, known to scouts as ‘Mrs .T’ travelled to Windsor Castle to receive her award, while Tim Smith was presented with his award by Governor Ferguson at the Anglican Cathedral in Hamilton.
