Police Confirm Death Of 52-Year-Old Man

[Updated] A 52-year-old American man was pronounced dead after running into difficulty in the waters off Watford Bridge this afternoon [May 20], the police have confirmed.

Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines said, “At 3.45pm this afternoon, first responders attended a report of an incident that took place in the waters off of Watford Bridge.

“It appears that a 52-year-old man on the pleasure boat “Aristocrat” was swimming when he ran into difficulty.

“Ironically, Team Oracle was in the area; they actually rendevoused that man to Watford Bridge, where they were met by the EMTs from King Edward Memorial Hospital.

“He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4.21pm. No further information will be given until the next of kin has been notified.”

This marks the second tragic incident of this kind this week, following after the death of 25 year old Wilmis Herrera Moreno yesterday.

Update 9.32pm: A police spokesperson said, “Around 3:45pm Wednesday, May 20th first responders were dispatched to report of a 52 year old American visitor encountering difficulty while swimming in the waters near Watford Bridge in Sandys parish.

“It appears that the 52 year old, believed to be from California, was initially aboard the local pleasure boat ‘Aristocat’.

“America’s Cup Oracle Team USA crew members training nearby assisted in bringing the visitor to Watford Bridge dock where a waiting ambulance transported him to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital; however he was later pronounced dead at 4:21pm.

“An investigation into this incident has commenced and no further information regarding the deceased will be given until the next of kin has been notified.”

Update May 21, 7.55am: A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “Bermuda Radio receives an Urgent Call on VHF Ch 16 from a local Charter Vessel. The caller is seeking medical assistance for a distressed person in the water. The vessel and casualty are near Cavello Bay.

“Bermuda Radio Commences Urgency Calls to all Vessels in the vicinity to assist, and also contacts the Marine Police who quickly dispatch Heron 1 to the scene. An ambulance is also requested. The Americas Cup Oracle Team call Bermuda Radio and offer medical assistance. Bermuda Radio tasks the Oracle Medical personnel to attend.

“By 3:50pm the casualty is landed at Watford Bridge, where an Ambulance takes a 53 year old Male to Hospital. Unfortunately the man is later pronounced dead.”
