Weather Partially Closes Horseshoe Bay Beach

May 28, 2015

The Department of Parks is advising the public that, as of 3.15pm today [May 28], lifeguards at Horseshoe Bay have closed down a portion of the western end of the beach to swimmers due to dangerous surf conditions.

A government spokesperson said, “The Lifeguard Service will continue to closely monitor the conditions at Horseshoe while on duty.

“Current surf conditions are expected to last into tomorrow with potentially worsening conditions leading up to high tides. Beach patrons are asked to take heed to any lifeguard signage in addition to using extreme care and caution while enjoying any beach.”

I have often wondered why there are no lifeguards at Warwick Long Bay as their surf is very dangerous as well and it is a drop when you wade in which take swimmers off guard.

There are no lifeguards on Warwick Long Bay for that exact reason. The slope on the beach creates an undertow which is not only dangerous for beach patrons, but also for the lifeguards themselves. When you place lifeguards on a beach you are implying that it is ‘safe’ and encourages more people to swim there less cautiously. This has been the case since the service began operating over 20 years ago.

I never did like swimming at warwick long bay, it’s just something about that beach.

The very reasons why I objected to that ‘restaurant/bar on the beach’ scheme. Warwick Long Bay can be treacherous to the unskilled swimmer. For an inebriated swimmer, it could easily be fatal.

Good for you guys, no more lost tourists hopefully!
