“The Hazel Christopher Educational Award [HCEA] was established in honor of founding member of the JAB, the late Mrs. Hazel Christopher pictured]. Mrs. Hazel Christopher along with Mrs. Shurnett Caines, Mrs. Eunice Fisher, Mrs. Cassie Collins and Mrs. Sonia Durrant Barclay bonded together to establish the Jamaican Association [Bermuda] over 30 years ago,” the JAB said.

“Their efforts were pooled and channeled in fighting for the rights of Jamaicans living in Bermuda in the late 70s, 80s and 90s when prevailing conditions for Jamaicans were such that required formal representation.

“The late Mrs. Christopher efforts on the team added depth and significance to every struggle that the Jamaican community in Bermuda faced. To this end she is considered the matriarch of the Jamaican community and a champion for the wider Caribbean family.

“The late Mrs. Christopher was a selfless community servant and an astute business woman who spent some forty years on Court Street operating the In-Between Boutique. Her life and service to the local Jamaican community, Bermuda and Jamaica is one that the members of the JAB are proud of and holds dearly.

“As a result, the executive of the JAB takes pleasure in welcoming applications from all suitable candidates for this Award. Through this Award, we aim to keep the name and legacy of the late Mrs. Hazel Christopher alive for many generations to come. “
