Man Admits Stealing Bacon, Salmon, Gloves

June 8, 2015

Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [June 8], a 59-year-old man admitted stealing bacon, mackerel, and salmon from Marketplace.

Brian Jones pleaded guilty to stealing two packets of bacon, two packets of mackerel, and two packets of salmon from the Church Street Marketplace store on 5th May 2015. The food was valued at $59.

Mr Jones also plead guilty to stealing a pair of gloves from SAL Southampton on 13th May 2015.

DPP Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney told Senior Magistrate Juan Wolffe that shop staff had seen Mr Jones place the food under his jacket and leave the store. Store staff chased Mr Jones. During the chase he dropped the six packets and managed to get away. He was later positively identified off the store’s CCTV system.

In regards to the SAL theft, the Prosecutor told the Magistrate that an SAL cashier had noticed a wallet left lying on her counter. She went out to the parking lot to return it to her last customer, whose wallet she thought it was. However, on approaching the car that her last customer had entered, the car drove off at speed.

On examining the wallet, it contained Mr Jones’s driving licence. A check of the store’s CCTV confirmed that it was, indeed, Mr Jones who had let the wallet; but the CCTV check also showed that Mr Jones had taken a pair of gloves and had left without paying for the gloves.

The Senior Magistrate observed that, according to his record, Mr Jones had been “stealing like this since 2004.” Asked why he stole now, Mr Jones replied: “I was hungry.” The Senior Magistrate asked if he’d been hungry since 2004.

The Senior Magistrate ordered a Social Inquiry Report and granted Mr Jones bail at $1,000 and required a surety. Mr Jones must return for sentencing on 13th July.
