Bermuda’s Pan Am Team Gets Style Accolades
Bermuda’s Pan Am Team has been cited as having one of the best uniforms of all teams as well as being named to a “Top 7 moments of the Pan Am Games Opening Ceremony” list, with the writer citing our team’s “bare knees for national pride.”
As Bermuda’s teams often do in major competitions, the island’s athletes wore traditional business attire, pairing Bermuda shorts with jackets, ties and long socks.

“The British Overseas Territory made a risky move by pairing shorts with formal jackets,” the Toronto Star said. ”The shorts were in one of Bermuda’s colours: red. It’s hard to pull off, but pull it off the team did, looking dapper with their navy blue jackets.”
The Toronto Star seemed quite impressed by our team’s attire as — citing the “bare knees for national pride” — they also named Bermuda to their “top 7 moments of the Pan Am Games Opening Ceremony” list.
The Bermuda and Canadian teams were listed alongside five other standout moments of the Opening Ceremony, including the Cirque du Soleil spectacle and the stunts performed by Canadian Olympic medalist Donovan Bailey.
The Opening Ceremony was held at the Rogers Centre, temporarily renamed the Pan Am Ceremonies Venue, and is reported to have been sold-out, with a crowd of some 45,000 people in attendance.
Swimmer Julian Fletcher served as our flag bearer during the Opening Ceremony held last night [July 10], and Bermuda started the first day of competition in style, with triathlete Flora Duffy capturing a bronze medal earlier today.
In a tweet following her medal win, Ms Duffy noted it was the first Pan Am medal win for Bermuda in 16 years, and used the hashtag #smallislandbigpassion.
The Pan American Games are the world’s third largest international sporting festival, and Bermuda’s athletes join some 7,000 others from 41 nations at the Toronto Games. We are being represented in the triathlon, swimming, sailing, gymnastics, equestrian, cycling and athletics.
Hopefully we earn more medals
Well we have the reputation as being well dressed in sports events, regiment marching and most expensive city in the world, but unemployment and cost of living on the rise but they still want us to wave and smile like Johnny Barns.
