July 13, 2015

A partnership between the Chamber of Commerce and the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation [BEDC] has been formed, with the group saying the goal is “to help revitalize the North Hamilton area with the potential extension of Harbour Nights.”

“It was recently published that the North Hamilton area would like to tap into the powerhouse of Harbour Nights,” they said. “BEDC has been working with the business, residents, and community stakeholders in North East Hamilton for multiple years in a collective effort to rejuvenate this culturally and historically rich and diverse corner of the City of Hamilton.

“Following on from the hard work and progress that had taken place by the community, North East Hamilton was designated as an Economic Empowerment Zone in June 2007 to continue with that work.

“Community organizations such as the Uptown Market Association and later, Up! Bermuda, were staunch advocates in ensuring North East Hamilton wasn’t overlooked through various initiatives and events.

“One of these events was Culture Fest which took place weekly so that visitors and locals could experience the best of the area in a lively, diverse, cultural market night.

“The ending of this weekly festival has been a huge miss to the area and the Island and, as such, the opportunity for the BEDC to partner with the Chamber of Commerce to see how something can be revived for Harbour Nights 2016 was welcomed.”

Kendaree Burgess Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce states, “Our mandate is to support the growth and development of all member business in Bermuda.

“We reached out to the BEDC to see if there was a way to assist with the North Hamilton area for Harbour Nights 2016. We are hopeful that we can jointly create a solution that will work for both areas.”

Erica Smith, Executive Director of the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation states “BEDC has partnered with the Chamber of Commerce in the past and always welcomes the opportunity to work together for the betterment of businesses, entrepreneurs, and community.

“Harbour Nights is an established institution and a model we point to from a best-practice point of view and it makes sense to see how we can link North East Hamilton into the picture.

“We remain committed to regenerating North East Hamilton and look forward to working with the Chamber to make this initiative a possibility and a win-win for all.”
