Chinese Lantern Sighting Prompts Reminder

September 21, 2015

Members of the public are being reminded of the importance of reporting intended launches of Chinese Lanterns after a Devonshire resident reported seeing what may have been distress flares on Friday night [Sept 18] near Devonshire Dock.

A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “On Friday 18th September, 8:20pm, a resident in the Mission Lane area near Devonshire Dock reported via the 911 system, seeing what may have been 3 marine distress flares in the vicinity of Devonshire Dock.

“RCC Bermuda’s investigation of the incident, VHF radio broadcasts to any boating in the area and Bermuda Police Service dispatch of a land patrol to the area all yielded no results and it was suspected the observant resident may have seen Chinese Lanterns.

“This incident serves to highlight the importance of reporting intended launches of Chinese Lanterns to Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre and the Bermuda Police Service, indicating the time and location of the launches and the number of Chinese Lanterns in use.”
