Court: Woman Pleads Guilty To Stealing Socks
Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [Sept 9] 28-year-old Melanie Gareau pleaded guilty to stealing three pairs of socks from Brown & Co in August 2015.
The Crown Prosecutor told Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that store security staff had observed her actions and had accosted her outside Brown & Co’s entrance. The socks were not found in her bag, but were found pushed down inside a furled umbrella that she was carrying.
The Court’s Duty Counsel told the Magistrate that Ms Gareau said that she was planning to leave Bermuda, permanently, on Thursday 10th September and that she hoped that the outcome of her pleading would not delay that departure.
Magistrate Tokunbo considered the matter and told Ms Gareau that given that the socks had been recovered and the theft was at the low end of the crime spectrum, he would consider that her public humiliation and embarrassment was sufficient punishment.
The Magistrate then granted Ms Gareau a six month Conditional Discharge.
