Man Pleads Guilty: Possessing Machete & Knife

September 9, 2015

Appearing in Magistrates Court today [Sept 9], a 46-year-old man pleaded guilty to being in a public place and unlawfully possessing a machete and kitchen knife.

Troy Harris pleaded guilty to being in a public place and unlawfully possessing two bladed articles – a machete and a kitchen knife – outside a Happy Valley store in Pembroke in September 2015.

The Crown Prosecutor told the Magistrate that Police had responded to a call about a fight. On quickly responding, Police had seen Mr Harris with the two items in his possession but that he had thrown them over a wall. Police recovered a machete and a knife.

Mr Harris told the Magistrate that he had not used the items and had not been charged with their use, nor had he been charged with fighting.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo handed down a four month prison sentence – but suspended it for twelve months.

Asking Mr Harris if he knew what that meant, Mr Harris replied that he knew it to mean that if he committed any other offence within the next twelve months, the suspended sentence could be activated and he could go to prison.
