BELCO: 60 Customers Remain Without Power

October 8, 2015

[Updated] BELCO crews are continuing to work to restore services to all customers following the passing of Hurricane Joaquin, with “just over 100″ customers remaining without power.

A spokesperson said, “As of last night there were 17 customers without electricity. That number shot up during the night and is now just over 100. Some customers who had power restored after the hurricane, lost power again as a result of the early morning rain, wind and thunderstorms.

“It is not unusual for this to occur, as hurricane winds can cause salt deposits that affect connections, and parts of the system would have been weakened by trees and flying debris.

“Additionally, there also have been some customers temporarily taken off line today; in order for crews to repair other sections of the system. Their supply will be reinstated. Much of the work that is being done today is both time and resource consuming.

“An example of this is extensive tree trimming and the stringing of large spans of cable that need to be replaced.

“Crews are working very hard to get everyone back on as soon as possible. Customers who may have turned off power at their breaker switch are also reminded to make sure the breaker is turned back on after BELCO has made repairs in order to resume receiving supply.”

Update 5.24pm: A BELCO spokesperson said, “Please note that as of 4:40PM we are back down to 60 customers without power, down from the 100 reported at 4:15PM.”
