Students To Benefit From Partnership With Lahey

October 29, 2015

Students in the Bermuda College Nursing Programme are being provided with opportunities to network with some of the renowned medical specialists from Lahey Hospital & Medical Center.

Representatives from Lahey collaborated with the College’s Nursing Education Team recently to seek educational opportunities for students in the Associate of Science in Nursing Programme.

Director of Nursing Education, Ms. Kathy-Ann Swan said “We all recognised that there were opportunities to advance our interest in health care. Bermuda College, from the nursing education perspective; and Lahey from the clinical practice and research.

“Sharing best practices and utilising subject experts is mutually beneficial as our students are able to get access to some of the very best in specialised medicine and practice as an integral part of their curriculum.”

Students and nursing lecturers will be assisting with blood sugar and blood pressure screenings at the Health Fair focusing on diabetes at Bermuda College, November 7.

For the first time, Lahey will partner with another top quality Boston-based hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, to broadly address these difficult chronic disease issues across all age ranges.

Ms. Linda Moulton, CEO Executive and International Health, at Lahey said,“We hope this is the first of many collaborations between Lahey and the Bermuda College Nursing Programme.

“We are honoured to work with the College and the great group of students with whom we share a passion for great heath care in Bermuda”.

The Fair will comprise two components – an outreach to the general community about cultivating and maintaining healthy habits to counteract chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.

The second outreach is to those in the medical profession to encourage them to attend and earn continuing medical education [CME] units required toward maintaining their credentials. “

“Bermuda College nursing students will also be exposed to these medical professionals and will have more networking opportunities to further their career aspirations,” noted Kelley McKinney, Bermuda Liaison for Lahey and the local participating medical organizations,

Ms. McKinney also noted that the Bermuda College Nursing Programme was an ideal way for Lahey and Boston Children’s to give back to the local community.

The Hospital sponsors four health fairs annually as part of its BeHealthy Bermuda initiative and recently sponsored Health Fairs at the Women’s Resource Centre and the Bermuda Industrial Union.
