Dispute, Southampton Mail Delivery Disrupted
[Updated] The Bermuda Post Office has advised residents of Southampton that there is no mail delivery service to two routes “pending the resolution of an industrial dispute” with the BIU, adding that they are “working to resolve the dispute fairly and quickly.”
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Post Office [BPO] regrets to advise residents of Southampton that there is no mail delivery service to routes: SN01 and SN02 pending the resolution of an industrial dispute with the Bermuda Industrial Union.
“The matter is presently with the Department of Workforce Development and is being handled pursuant to all relevant labour dispute resolution processes.
“Affected residents may collect their mail directly from the Southampton Post Office.
“The BPO management apologizes for the inconvenience caused and is working to resolve the dispute fairly and quickly.”
Update 5.16pm: The BIU’s statement conflicts with the government’s statement, with the BIU saying they are “not aware of an industrial dispute.”
The BIU said, “Contrary to the statement issued by the Department of Communication and Information, the Bermuda Industrial Union is not aware of an industrial dispute at the Southampton Post Office.
“We are aware that one of the two post persons at the Southampton Post Office retired in mid-October. The Post Master General was aware that the postal worker would be retiring as outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
“The BIU has been in discussions with the Post Master General regarding “Redeployment of Post Persons”, however we are of the opinion that these discussions has no affect on the situation the Southampton Post Office.
“We have always been willing to take these discussions further. However, on October 19, 2015, the Post Master General referred the “Redeployment” matter to the Department of Workforce Development. We believe this to be a separate issue to the current situation of the Southampton Post Office.
“The Bermuda public should be aware that heads of Government departments were asked to cut expenditures by 5% because of budgetary restraints. However, the Post Master General cut expenditures by 30% which has caused other problems in the department.
“The BIU looks forward to meeting with the Post Master General so that this matter can be resolved to the satisfaction of all concerned.”
Lol for real. What is it now?
Should not make any difference since there is very little to deliver as there is very little mail.
PRIVATIZE!!!!
I knew the Tea Party Slogan was going to appear.
LMFAO
Probably pissed because they brought back mail they did not deliver because they had to stand in line too long for lunch and …..tink of something.
Does this mean “No delivery today” (Tuesday), or for the whole week???
Delivery bike broke down and he was told he has to use a moped?
I’m glad they’re going through the correct channels and notifying people.
I hope it gets worked out smoothly and soon.
Seriously, that’s the best part of the process by far. Keeping the public informed.
How will people pay there bills smh
are you really that dense ?
They have a dispute with the BIU? Huh?
More misinformation coming from the OBA mouthpieces .
Let’s be fair folks…every Dept has to have their turn…buses…ferries…garbage collections now mail delivery…what Dept. is next. This would be fine if govt. were somehow saving money by these work stoppages…the work stops but does the clock stop too.??
And the post office is only loosing $7million dollars per year.
Have they sold the old parish post offices yet before another money wasting department is formed and moved in.
How about the old police station…… sell it to help even pay some of the interest at nearly $500,000.00 per day on the money we owe.
And still borrowing $220million a year to pay the civil service.
Dispute??? They have the easiest job on the planet and they are in dispute? Get rid of them! There are a LOT of Bermudians that can do that simple job
More lies from the postmaster general
And foreign workers too.
According to the Sage commission, the post office is 180 % over staffed. So why can’t someone fill in? Another pathetic load of civil servants.
