Court: 43-Year-Old Man Admits Stealing Jacket

February 8, 2016

Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [Feb 8], a 43-year-old Martin Morris admitted stealing a jacket valued at $170.

Martin Morris plead guilty to stealing a jacket valued at $170 from Gibbons Co Men’s Department in November 2015. He also plead guilty to disobeying a traffic sign and having no driver’s licence in August 2015.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Mr Morris $250 for the two traffic offences but ordered a Social Inquiry Report before passing sentence, in March, on the theft matter.

The Crown Prosecutor told the Magistrate that the store’s CCTV had recorded Mr Morris rolling up a jacket that was on display and then exiting the store without paying. Staff followed him but were unable to catch him. Police caught up with him and arrested him in early January 2016.

On being questioned by Police, Mr Morris admitted stealing the jacket, saying that he did so in order to pay for his drug habit.

Speaking for himself, Mr Morris said that he apologized but at the time was homeless and unemployed. He told the Magistrate that: “The last time I was in Court was in 2010.” He said that he was employed, part-time, as a painter.

The Magistrate granted bail at $1,000.
