Open Airways Donates Pillows, Offers Tips

February 3, 2016

Through their ‘Pillows for Prevention Program,’ Open Airways is passing on tips regarding the health benefits of a good pillow, as well as ensuring that every primary school age child in Bermuda with asthma receives a new pillow every year via a donation supported by people and groups around the island.

This year’s pillow donation was made possible by lead sponsor Axis Insurance, who donated the necessary funds; Marks & Spencers, who placed the order and donated the cost of international shipping; Allied World, who stored the pillows; the Department of Health’s school asthma nurse, who distributed the pillows throughout the schools; and Saltus Grammar School students, who assisted with counting and affixing labels to the pillows.

A spokesperson said, “With the New Year well on its way, it’s time to remember a healthy household tip: replace your pillow with a new one each year.”

Pillows for Prevention

“How old is your pillow? Your old pillow may be harmful to your health.

“Purchasing a new pillow every year is less about the pillow breaking down, but much more about what can be found in the pillow upon which you lay your head and face night after night for hours on end. Pillows harbor molds, fungi spores and dust mites.

“House dust are microscopic bugs that primarily live on dead skin cells regularly shed from humans and their animal pets. Dust mites are generally harmless to most people. They don’t carry diseases, but can cause allergic reactions in asthmatics and others who are allergic to their feces. Dust mites thrive in our warm humid Bermuda climate.

“Nearly 70% of people agree that a comfortable pillow is important to a good night’s sleep. Most make the crucial mistake when it comes to our favorite pillows – we’re keeping them way too long. Experts recommend washing your pillow every three months, and replacing them annually.

“Do yourself a favour and replace your pillow every year.”
