A spokesperson said, “The Ministry of Tourism Development and Transport wishes to advise the public that there will be no bus service Monday morning as a result of industrial action.

“The Ministry apologises for this development and will keep the public advised on the status of service.”

The initial withdrawal of labour on Friday resulted in the suspension of bus, ferry and garbage collection services, and people are expected to gather again tomorrow morning.

  1. Cmkbda says:

OK…if Dunkley filed an injunction against these guys, can we FINALLY fire the lot of them, and give the jobs to those unemployed Bermudians who might actually value their jobs?! This is absolutely ridiculous. Illegal strikes should be fireable offenses.

    • Cotty says:

      Agreed!

      • question says:

When I travelled back Friday there was no customs at the airport. Are they working tomorrow?I have to collect my friend who’s coming for spring break.

        • Vesper Lynn says:

Customs was at the airport all day. Clean your glasses!

      • Not happy. says:

What to the 21 days notice for Industrial Action.

        • Not happy. says:

Sorry, I missed a word, What happened to the 21 days notice for Industrial Action.

          • Rada Gast says:

It’s not a strike, it’s a “withdrawal of labor” according to the people who are directing the opposition to anything they decide that they want to protest against because it does not suit their agenda.

“withdrawal of labor” is of course just weasel words, used to try to hide the fact that of course this is an illegal strike.

            • 1 minute says:

As it is not an official BIU strike, then the BIU should not complain when the people aren’t paid for not going to work.

    • Come Correct says:

I’d jump on a government job one time.

      • Blood Test says:

You wouldn’t pass the drug test since you always talking about weed.

        • Come Correct says:

Haha I passes a hair follicle test smoking butter (99% thc). Don’t tell me what I can or can’t do with science.

        • Come Correct says:

For a private company at that, not some silly government drug test.

        • ricozihastu says:

          Haha…that was funny

    • Narcos says:

Privatize the civil service. If it happens again, FIRE THEM! Seriously the stupidity has got to stop.

    • Legalgal says:

Injunction has been granted. Fire away.

      • smh says:

All you people commenting are expats

        • Cmkbda says:

Actually…Bermudian, born and bred. And I would fire EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. It’s time that we stopped letting the BIU, Chris Furbert, and Reverend Tweed hold our island hostage. This has nothing to do with union workers, so they have no right to strike. Get back to work, or the lot of them should all be out of jobs come Monday evening.

        • Legalgal says:

And? That’s like concluding that you are xenophobic after a comment like that.

          • george says:

actually, that’s like saying if you don’t work you don’t get paid. this is not a new concept, and it is how the big companies make the big profits. you know, by only paying those who actually work.

Xenophobia is the fear of that which is perceived to be foreign or strange.
firing those who refuse to work is not xenophobic, it is justice.

            • Berm Blood says:

You are an idiot and obviously don’t care about OUR island, Yea even yours!

        • 32n64w says:

Not true. Not even a little bit.

    • Oh and is it illegal to take from Born Bermudians and give to people who where never born or raised here, and further to that what do you really think it will take for this government to listen.

I APPLAUD THE ACTIONS OF THOSE WHO HAS GONE AGAINST THE NORM TO ACCOMPLISH GREATER, GOING FORWARD AND ESPECIALLY ON BEHALF OF MANY YOUNG WHO CAN NOT STAND FOR THEIR OWN FUTURE.

Further more if there is something that dissatisfies me with all this, it would be the fact that “MANY ARE PAYING VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE BILL ON THE PATHWAY TO BERMUDA STATUS” “WHILE ANOTHER SILENT GIANT IS SLIPPING IN THE BACK DOOR AGAIN”

WAKE UP BERMUDA! Same sex unions were guaranteed safe passage through the Supreme courts of Bermuda, and a deadline was given for February 29th 2016, So while we are Pre-Occupied with Immigration reform, and we should be keeping it to the fore front, There are applications that folk are processing to give these same sex couples rights to bring their significant others the right to come here, so while we are trying to keep the flood gates from opening to new work permit holders coming through our front door of immigration, they are slipping these applications into place and sooner then we think they will be upon our shores.

Then we still have the same problem, of foreigners coming here and taking jobs that we are entitled to, based on sexual orientation.

“LET’S UNMASK THIS EVIL PLOT AND STOP IT FROM COMING IN FROM THE FRONT,BACK ,SIDEWAYS, AND ANY OTHER WAY THEY WANT TO TRY.

We say NO to Pathway to Status, no to rubber stamping homosexuals and lesbians into having the right to come from their foreign land, to take our jobs as well.

      • Noncents says:

        @ Duane

Wow you are an idiot. I cant even be bothered refuting such hate filled nonsense.

Why do you hate so strongly?

        • David says:

You just have to laugh at the characters on this island lol. OBA – keep on trucking, you’re doing the right thing. Sometimes you just have to act to help people, even if they don’t understand why.

          22 year old Black Bermudian

        • drunken ursula says:

you’re an idiot also… I’ve heard such nasty comments about locals down at cabinet, talk about smiling faces damn they do tell lies. I can’t wait same people I work and party with, the water cooler talk will be strange.

      • Cmkbda says:

I’m a born Bermudian, and I have had nothing taken from me by the people who will be affected with this new law. Bermudians have the opportunity to apply for every job which these work permit holders currently occupy. Either Bermudians weren’t qualified, or didn’t want them. Either way…nothing taken from Bermudians. Grow up and stop shouting your nonsense, because no one is listening.

      • aceboy says:

“We say NO to Pathway to Status, no to rubber stamping homosexuals and lesbians into having the right to come from their foreign land, to take our jobs as well.”

        Wow. Just wow.

You are a paranoid delusional homophobic xenophobe.

      • Education, education, education says:

The hate is strong in this one.

      • CCT says:

So, how did you feel when your former PLP Premier brought in four foreigners and gave them automatic status and jobs, jobs that many Bermudians could have done??? No big fuss from you lot then!!!!

        • Catherine Dalziel says:

They do not have status. They are sadly stateless and cannot go anywhere.

      • skytrain says:

I tried to read your post but, I’m sorry it is so incoherent and so poorly written, and so adolescent that I’m actually embarrassed you would post on this or any blog. My 6 year old can write and spell better!

      • Vesper Lynn says:

Way too much to read, next!

      • 32n64w says:

Willfully uniformed, homophobic, xenophobic, myopic, self interested drivel.

    • ricozihastu says:

I’m am positive that I can drive de bus.

      • Verly says:

You can’t even write a one line sentence properly…I wouldn’t trust you behind the wheel of a bus.

    • rodney smith says:

Not so fast. Let’s not attempt to put out the fire with gasoline.

    • Meh. says:

Bermudians screwing over Bermudians to make the point that they only care about Bermudians. Perfect logic.

    • Spotty says:

This action is hurting Bermudas mostly, or?

  2. Triangle Drifter says:

Time for all of the mini bus services to step up to the plate & show what they can do.

Let the PTB drivers & administrators strike themselves right out of their cushy jobs.

  3. Domino says:

Holding the nation hostage is not the answer.

    • CCT says:

I am amazed and appalled at how often Chris Furbert can call on BIU members to shut the island down!!! Don’t understand it! Sad!

      • Nanny Pat says:

I’m waiting for him to explain why hurting school children and working Bermudians is his answer to all of this?

    • hmmm says:

Exactly, bus drivers, get our kids to school and teachers give them the education they deserve.

  4. NO MORE WAR says:

The people should learn from Gov. The Gov didn’t care about the school children when they were trying to force furlough days on the teachers. Which would have meant children would have missed school as a result of furlough days. The people should file injunctions against Gov when they forcing things down their throat. But then again it seems the court cares nothing about Bermudians either.

    • Infidelguy says:

      @No More War

Your comment gets the “most asinine comment of the day” prize.

      SMH!

    • Toodle-oo says:

      No More War
Please let me know when you VOLUNTEER to go and pay the government the $40,000+ that you owe them . I’d like to be there in person to see how happy you are .

    • John says:

So, you have no clue how a government works.

    • warwick pond skink says:

You should actually be looking at the previous nightmare government for that cost cutting necessity
Damn you lot have short memories.

  5. Up D hill says:

OBA time to privatize and call in this useless BIU union 7 million none of you bus drivers will get paid but union employees and Chris Fur Bert will be!

  6. Narcos says:

We are literally all going to be farmers on this island if we don’t educate the thick-minded minority. It’s unfortunate the majority of union workers have to suffer from egocentric leadership. To those who want to see Bermuda grow – go to work tomorrow please and stop the nonsense.

    • suspicious says:

That’s the problem!! Whats wrong with being farmers with a shortage of fresh vegetation and livestock around the world?? Oh sorry I forgot, you all would survive eating your microwave cuisines!

      • hmmm says:

How we gonna afford to import and buy cars and oil and generate electricity if all we got is carrots, bananas and seasonal broc.

You sound like you want Bermudians to go to work on a plantation…

I want better for my people

      • ricozihastu says:

They love that microwave. Let us raise fowl and veggies. Peace and Love.

      • 32n64w says:

Nothing is wrong, farming is an honorable and much needed component of any economy. However, in the 21st century we need more than farmers to survive.

    • Vesper Lynn says:

Farmers and fisherman. These lazy jokers are screwing it up and don’t even know better.

  7. Family Man says:

Grow some balls OBA and trim the civil service.

Ronald Reagan set a great example for you to follow and there hasn’t been an air traffic disruption since.

  8. Mobylette says:

“We urge our members to consider carefully the future of our island home, as they contemplate their decision to join any effort to lobby Government on this issue of national importance.”
My understanding that Unions were originally formed approx. 150 years to represent the workers in regards to safer working conditions, long hours, low pay, child labour, health benefits etc. In this case it appears that the hierarchy of the BTUC are passing the proverbial buck to the members to strike illegally without taking any responsibility for it themselves. Sweet. This is a political issue not a grievance issue. Its a slippery slope when a political party, in this case the Opposition, can call on the Unions to strike. The withdrawal of essential services won’t affect the outcome of this immigration issue/legislation. It’s a done deal. As an unemployed/ barely self employed Bermudian still paying taxes, I don’t have the job security like those who may strike. You have a job to return to. No risk. No real financial pain. No real sacrifice… unlike those men and women 150 years ago who fought and in some cases died for a Union that provide you with that blanket of security you enjoy today. Please think when you consider going on strike. the disruption and effect on the struggling local businesses, our visitors spending money on our island, and the average citizen trying to earn a living and relies on your services/help to ‘stay afloat’ on this island we call home. I’ll be giving people lifts to work tomorrow morning and taking my trash to the dump.

  9. Ringmaster says:

Industrial action? This must surely be a clear breach of the CBA as this is a political, not industrial, action. Why do we taxpayers have to continue to pay for these stoppages, let alone pay for more debt to enable the “workers” to receive their pay for not working. Let the BIU pay them.

  10. Really says:

NoW, I have paid for a monthly pass($69). Can the striking drivers reimburse those of us who are now forced to find alternative transportation. Holding me hostage the way. Js

  11. Je suis Bermuda says:

This is unbelievable!! Why do the rest of us have to over and over again cover the costs of people who obviously do not care whether they have jobs or not! News flash PLP/BIU workers – WE ARE PAYING YOU TO GO TO WORK.
Fire the lot of them and start again! Only this time, with people who value their jobs!
Perhaps the silver lining in this – its a great opportunity to trim the civil service!

  12. Southampton says:

Another day off for the bus drivers. Who else will not be working.
Do all of these guys really understand what they are doing to this island?
With Chris Furbert leading them, it is highly doubtful.

    Wake up you fools.

  13. Doctor says:

If this is a sick day do they require a doctor’s note? I will pick up any tourist I see waiting for a bus.

Thank you so very much unions.

  14. erm says:

Also good news for the taxi drivers!

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Another great day for taxi drivers.

Just think how fast the minibus operators could take over PTB & revamp the whole thing. Government can make the whole lot redundant. Rehire those who want to work. No more rediculous vacation & sick time. No more wildcat strikes. If unionised the CBA gets adhered to.

  15. archy says:

selfish and yet again my business is going to be disrupted by the people I am paying for! This has long since ceased to be about immigration, this is a concerted move to try and remove a Govt.

  16. Franklin Jr says:

    Fire them all

The island is (figuratively) going to get messed up if this keeps up anyway… might as well get it over with

  17. Positivity says:

This is not a strike so what will the repercussions be?

    • Vesper Lynn says:

Nothing. Government workers will take a vacay day. SHM!

  18. Mobylette says:

I personally don’t like being strong armed. If the unions choose to strike so be it. I hope the government of the day doesn’t give in. Regular citizen’s are fed up with the use of a strike just because things aren’t going the way of the PLP faithful. I encourage my fellow Bermudians to give some one a lift, take your trash to the privatized dump that’s open, be respectful and wait this out.

  19. Terry says:

    Hell with them
Are you going to cover the Pathways gathering at the Cabinet grounds?
    It should be starting soon.

  20. Jesus Christ says:

How stupid are these people who strike?!?! HOW THE HELL YOU STRIKE ON FRIDAY BUT NOT THE WEEKEND!!! Obviously it’s not the government you are striking against, just a long weekend… SMDH!!! Im waiting for someone higher then the parties to finally step in and straighten out all the crap that’s been going on. then there will nothing ANYONE can do about it…

    DUECES!!!

  21. Tanya says:

Beyond disgusted!! There are so many hypocritical Bermudians on this island. Many have absolutely NO problem encouraging university students to seek employment and take up residence outside of Bermuda upon graduation. Whose job will they be stealing when/if they do? Selfish!!!

  22. Family Man says:

The civil service lives off the backs of private workers. You would think they would be a little more thankful for their jobs.

  23. Brian says:

I would like to know how many bus driver or garbage collectors Jobs are at threat (none)Just bigots and haters wanting another day off

  24. rodney smith says:

Bermuda, Right or wrong, we are here because we are not listening to each other. We have one group on the cabinet grounds and one on parliament grounds. Who is right and who is wrong, Neither. We just have differences that we need to work out. This is a time for real Leadership. Let’s see who steps up to the plate.

  25. Tom Cooke says:

As somone who is currently out of work… if someone asked would I take a day off a month to keep my job… hell yeah…

  26. Captain Jack says:

Get the Army in to operate the buses, or at least get them out training if the buses are not running, this way the island can not be held to ransom by a minority.

  27. BDALAX14 says:

I will be traveling into Hamilton from the Keith Hall Road area tomorrow at about 7:15am. I have a small car but, if anyone needs a ride into town from my neighborhood I would be happy to take them.

  28. j says:

Don’t you guys realise this only affects the worse-off? My day is entirely unaffected by your striking actions. Go for a year, prove your uselessness.

  29. Kevin says:

if they don’t show up for work FIRE THEM simple stuff and then lets move on

  30. Sandgrownan says:

    Fire them all.

  31. treefrog says:

To Quote Martin Luther King Jr.- “Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity”

  33. true Bue says:

I have 4 vans in my “fleet”. I am dispatching my guys to pick up people at bus stops tomorrow morning and give them a lift. I will tell my customers why we are late. Bermudians and Bermuda comes first for me. We will overcome. Pathways to success.

  34. Tiger Lily says:

There is so much hatred for the unions. I don’t see where the non union supporters who choose not to pay membership dues turn down the benefits awarded for the positions.

  35. Miguelito says:

Two words: illegal strike. Fire ‘em! Now.

  36. Berm Blood says:

You know this is nonsense, no thought, nor care, nor concern for OUR island., everyone get up tomorrow and go to work!
