Arts Centre To Open ‘Art Of Craft’ On Sunday
The Bermuda Arts Centre is getting set to open its ‘Art of Craft’ show on Sunday [Apr 17], featuring work from local crafters in order to “celebrate and show off the amazing talent that lies in the creation of crafts.”
The show will open from 3.30pm to 5.30pm, with Dr. Edwin Smith to be on hand to sign copies of his newly released book ‘Imagemaking and the Bermudian Artist.’
A spokesperson said, “Every year, the Bermuda Arts Centre holds its annual Art of Craft Show featuring work from local crafters. There have been great discussions of whether art is craft; at the Arts Centre, we feel that all great crafters are also great artists.
“To celebrate and show off the amazing talent that lies in the creation of crafts, we hold a show once year and invite all crafters to show their best.”
“Some of our entries this year include jewelry, cedar clocks, cedar carvings, big apples, funky fish, bowls, ceramic wall hangings, baskets, hats, quilts, onions, pressed flowers, calabash, dream catchers, and functional art.
“Also at our opening, we are pleased to have Dr. Edwin Smith signing his newly released book ‘Imagemaking and the Bermudian Artist.’ The book is intended to acknowledge, analyse, and celebrate visual art created through the perspectives of artists for whom Bermuda is, or has been, home; it features art about art.
“While locally-based artists continue to be fascinated with the island’s physical beauty and its brilliant light and colour, their interests, media, and activities have widened. This now includes individuals from a wider cross-section of the community who explore and manipulate formal elements and techniques.
“Bermudian artists, increasingly, see their work as a voice, as an invitation to dialogue, as an embodiment of ideas, and as a source of identity.”
The Art of Craft opens this Sunday, April 17 from 3.30pm to 5.30pm, running until May 13. For more information, call 234-2809 or email artcentre@logic.bm.
