Court: Father Appears For Slapping Defendant
The father of a young woman who was killed in a road collision appeared in Court this morning [April 20], where he admitted slapping the man who caused the death of his daughter.
Patrick Richardson was yesterday sentenced to four years in prison for causing the death of 22-year-old La-Nae Woodley, who was killed in a hit and run collision last year.
Mr Dean Eve, the father of Ms Woodley, was before Justice Charles-Etta Simmons this morning.
Mr Eve was facing a Contempt of Court charge because yesterday, inside the Supreme Court building, he had slapped Mr Richardson – the man who has caused the death of his daughter.
Following questioning by Justice Simmons, Mr Eve admitted that yesterday afternoon, he found himself face-to-face with Mr Richardson who was being brought back into Court to complete his sentencing hearing.
Mr Eve admitted that he slapped Richardson, telling Justice Simmons: “I was overwhelmed. I just reacted.”
Justice Simmons explained that it was her duty to protect the whole process of the law and that she was aware that emotions can run high during trials and sentencing.
The Justice also said that she and the Courts are bound to protect all defendants, witnesses, and jurors from any treatment that was a direct result of their participation in a legal proceeding.
Justice Simmons said that she would release Mr Eve immediately.
