April 6, 2016

The excitement is building as Bermuda prepares to join 43 sites around the world this month to participate in Fishackathon 2016.  Registration is still open and participation is free.

Fishackathon is a two-day event beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 22 and concluding at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 24, where techies and environmentalists will collaborate in teams to create new applications and tools to address challenges related to sustainable fisheries worldwide.

Participants will choose to work on one of nine different global or regional problems which will be kept secret until the start of the event.

Speaking on behalf of the Bermuda Fishackathon steering committee, U.S. Consul General Mary Ellen Koenig noted, “We have already assembled an impressive group of professionals and students planning to participate, but we have space for a few more.

“All ages are welcome.  You can come as an individual and form a team or bring a team of up to five people.  Just register at www.fishackathon.co/hamilton.  It’s not too late to be a part of this worldwide movement.”

Participation is free.  Fishackthon Bermuda will be held at BIOS, and food and drink will be provided throughout the weekend, including lots of coffee!  IT experts and fisheries mentors will be available to assist participants as necessary.   Teams will present their work to a panel of local judges at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 24.

The judges will nominate one Bermuda winner, who will then compete internationally for grand prizes, including a second prize of $10,000 cash and a grand prize of a $20,000 seed development grant.

Local prizes will also be given to first, second and third place Bermuda winners, including a snorkeling trip to North Rock for the first place team and an expedition to Nonsuch Island for the second place team.

Consul General Koenig acknowledged the local sponsors who have made this event possible, including primary sponsor ABIR and BIOS, who donated the space for the Fishackathon.  Other welcome sponsors include Conyers Dill & Pearman, the Bermuda Business Development Agency, CCS Group Limited, BTC, Link Bermuda, PwC Bermuda, and Devil’s Isle Coffee Company.

Ms. Koenig also expressed appreciation to the members of the planning committee whose knowledge, experience, and support have been invaluable, including the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation; the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo; the Bermuda Zoological Society; the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences; Code 441; the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute; the Department of E-commerce; the Department of Environmental Protection; the Sustainable Development Department; the Department of Conservation Services; the Fishermen’s Association of Bermuda; Greenrock; and the Ocean Support Foundation.
