Photos & Video: BIU Celebrates 70th Anniversary

April 23, 2016

[Updated with video] The Bermuda Industrial Union [BIU] celebrated its 70th anniversary today [April 23] with a block party on Union Square, which featured games, vendors, refreshments, bouncy castle, and more.

Games were played by children and adults alike, with one of the games —  which involved candy, straws and a race –  seeing a competition between BIU President Chris Furbert, Premier Michael Dunkley and Acting Opposition Leader David Burt, with Mr Furbert recording the victory.

.

The BIU previously said, “This seminal organization must be recognized for what it has done for its members and all workers in Bermuda during its seventy-plus years of existence.

“It is an organization that has been founded on principles of doing what is right for the people and protecting the rights of the people when no other organization would do so.”

Congrats to the BIU on it’s 70th anniversary, there’s a proud history there worth celebrating.

    • Rhonnda Oliver says:

For those of you who’ve disliked my post…
I am not a fan of the BIU as it stands today, but I’m not prepared to dismiss the past where they were a strong power in bettering things for this island and Bermudians.

      Know their history.
      Know your history.

  2. Terry says:

    70 years.
    Many people did much.
    So many people …….
    Shalom.

  3. Sally says:

She’d have been a lot better attended if you threw the party on a week day

    • WarwickBoy says:

Indeed. As with everything concerning the BIU, turnout is always 100 times better M-F between 9 am and 5pm!

      • Sunfish says:

And of course the press will say thousands attended!

    • Common Sense Talking says:

What a crazy thing to say!

  4. Raymond Ray says:

Nice to witness people having fun…

  5. Onion Juice says:

Our Forefathers are smiling down on us.
    United we Stand
    Devided we Fall
    Be Watchful Always!

  6. mixitup says:

    Thank you BIU and congratulations.

  7. Fantasea says:

Bigger crowd when they all were protesting on the hill.

    • smh says:

OK and if the party had a bigger crowd than the protest you would STILL be hating so just be quiet.

    • Family Man says:

Except for Saturday and Sunday. That was on their own time.

  8. The real Sage says:

Was the fake hunger striker signing autographs??

    • Time Shall Tell says:

Your obsession with her is borderline of that of a Stalker.. However your comedic material requires refreshing, you’ve tapped that well far too much.

      • The real Sage says:

Sorry, she’s just two funny for words!

  9. Hurricane says:

Thank you Bermuda Industrial Union for being there. God knows what we have to endure from the likes of Fantasea if we didn’t have you.

Why don’t you type the whole word god?

    • Sunfish says:

PEOPLE OF D GRASS ROOTS??? PLEASE, EXPLAIN WHO YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT BECAUSE I AM CONFUSED BY” WHATEVER” IT IS YOUR SAYING!

  11. Common Sense Talking says:

To those trying to make a comparison between the protests and a fun day, if you stretch your narrow minds, you would realize that the protests are to protect rights and a fun day has nothing to do with earnings. A lot of people are out at their second job to make ends meet, like I was!

  12. Parsley says:

Man, Laverrne looks so happy to see the Premier in front of her temple. Guess she forgot to send the e-mail to keep some people away.

  13. Sunfish says:

LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS, ITS CLEAR, IF NO DAYS OFF ARE ON ORDER, NOBODY CARES BOUT UNIONS!
