50 Dead In Worst Mass Shooting In U.S. History

June 12, 2016

50 people were killed inside Pulse, a gay nightclub in Florida, Orlando Police Chief John Mina and other officials said Sunday morning, just hours after a shooter opened fire in the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

“At least 53 more people were injured, Mina said. Police have shot and killed the gunman, he told reporters,” CNN reports.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said he had declared a state of emergency for the city and has requested the governor do the same for the state.

CNN adds that before this tragic incident, the deadliest shootings in U.S. history were at Virginia Tech in 2007 and Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, with 32 and 27 killed.

“Our SWAT officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect. The suspect is dead,” Orlando Police Chief John Mina said at a press conference.

“He appeared to be carrying a rifle, an assault-type rifle and a handgun and had some type of device on him.”

“We are investigating this from all points of perspective as an act of terrorism,” said Special Agent Danny Banks, who’s in charge of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

The Orland Sentinel reports, “The man, whom officials have identified as 29-year-old Omar Mateen of Port St. Lucie, was killed after a shootout with Orlando police.”

The situation is still unfolding, and updates can be found on just about every major U.S. news website.

My heart goes out to the city of Orland and victims.

  2. Glenda R. says:

    Sad newd.
    God bless victims and families!!

  3. Family Man says:

    Another intolerant islamic bigot.

    • Mike Hind says:

It’s the intolerant part that’s important.

The islamic part just makes it easier for the media to call it “terrorism” (which it is) and shift the blame onto his religion and not his intolerance.

      • Zevon says:

The religion and the intolerance of gays are intertwined. Isis hates all sorts of groups, including gays. It is a capital offence in many islamic countries, along with adultery, apostacy, and encouraging apostacy.

        • Mike Hind says:

          Oy.

But it was his intolerance that did it.

This guy was American. His “ties to Isis” are irrelevant.
It’s the fact that he thought that gay people were less than human that allowed him to, in his mind, be ok with shooting them with an assault rifle.

          • Family Man says:

His religion is VERY relevant. It is the source of his intolerance.

            His nationality is irrelevant.

      • Family Man says:

Religion plays a big part in this violence. While most religions are intolerant of others to some degree, islam takes intolerance and violence to another level. It seems to be a core tenet of their religion, with their jihads, fatwas, sharia stonings and their insistence that women be covered head to toe in burqas.

While I don’t really care what you want to believe in and how you live your personal life, I have a huge issue with the preaching of intolerance and violence towards others. With islam, often its the imams who take the lead in promoting intolerance and violence.

        • Mike Hind says:

          So does Christianity.

          You’re describing both.

    • willow says:

You and people that think like you are the little twigs kindling the fires of hate, bringing forth a bone chilling cold.

  4. Thinking says:

Hmm gay club that say something

    • Mike Hind says:

      No. It doesn’t.
The victims are not at fault in this. At all.

      People died. People were murdered.

Who they were attracted to and where they hung out doesn’t say ANYTHING.

      Don’t be vile.

      • Daylilly says:

Mike. We agree on that. All lives have value. Many, many prayers went out for the victims, their families and friends.

        • Mike Hind says:

And yet you feel absolutely NO remorse spreading lies and filthy misinformation about the LGBT community.
You claim that all lives have value, yet you very obviously value LGBT lives less than heterosexual lives, evidenced by the continuous stream of hateful falsehoods you post about them.

You pray for them, then work to keep them from sharing equal access to rights. Sickening.

    • George P says:

Yes, it does say something: Namely that American society has a long way to go before Americans can live up to the claim by Ronald Reagan among others that the US is a “Shining city upon the hill”.

This shooting points to the abject failure of US politicians and policy makers to eliminate hate speech, and promote diversity and multiculturalism.

It is absolutely beyond belief that people who are filled with hate towards the gay community can get their hands on ANY firearm, never mind an assault rifle.

And it is even more shocking that hatred towards gay people is promoted by members of the clergy, not only in the US, but also in Bermuda. Let’s not pretend for one second that the upcoming vote on Same Sex Marriage is about marriage: deep down those who are against it are all about shaming gay people – folks who just want to live their lives openly and with the same dignity enjoyed by the heterosexual majority.

    • Nanny Pat says:

Your comment says quite a lot about you.

    • Still Laughing says:

Location or sexuality is all you can think of? 50 innocent people violently lost their lives due to intolerance that you seem to favor. What an idiotic jerk you are!!

    • HW says:

this was an evil act by an evil person who targeted unsuspecting, innocent human beings!!! To say anything else is disgusting, heartless, and shameful.

  5. Life is precious and when situations like this occur no matter what the motive behind it is, it reminds us just how sick and demonic some people really are, today we ourn with these grieving families, no matter if we know them or not, they have been devastated by the sudden lost of someone they hold dear.

Our prayers and our heart felt condolences go out to them at this time and may the culprits be brought to the fullest extent of the law, the punishment they so deserve for such a heinous and cruel act.

  6. Terry says:

How the hell can f’97ing idiots dislike the comments by Mike and Glenda.

    Shalom.

    • Rosie says:

Sadly people “dislike” all the time…..Even when the comments are genuine…..

      • HW says:

Often just kids doing it for a laugh and to be difficult, one would think.

  7. thetruth says:

Another Islamic murdering terrorist. How unusual.

    • Mike Hind says:

It’s not about his religion, it’s about the hate and lies and misinformation that he’d been fed that made his victims less than human to him.

      • Zevon says:

In this case it is pretty clearly about religion.

      • thetruth says:

Calling 911 and pledging allegiance to ISIS right before the attack was a bit of a giveaway.

      • Mike Hind says:

        It’s about hate, not Islam.

      • Mike Hind says:

As evidenced by… well, the evidence.

    • Livid Lesbian says:

50 members of the lgbtq community are dead, and you’re using it to push your disgusting, islamophobic agenda. How sensitive of you.

      • Zevon says:

A phobia is an irrational fear of something. The perp was an isis supporter.

      • thetruth says:

        Denial.

  8. Terry says:

    Stay tuned Bermuda.

    Stay tuned.

  9. Kangoocar says:

And the US President still refuses to call them what they are? So I will, they are RADICAL ISLMIC TERRORISTS and they need to be wiped off the face of the earth!! Sadly all we can expect for now is more of this! November can’t come soon enough, after that the New US President, will make sure the battle is won against these scum bags! He has said over and over, ” he will be tough and vigilant on them ” and that is the only thing they understand!!

    • Say Whaat? says:

Don’t worry Trump supporter, the black man you can’t stand will be leaving and the US will miss him soon enough.

Who is they?!? It was one shooter. Stop watching Fox news and get rid of your hatred!

    • bermyguy says:

the fact that donald trump, who you are assuming will be president, can run his mouth and talk bigotry and hate against whom ever he feels, is cool with you. trump steers up more hate and division with he rhetoric that any one else, but because he’s Wh!te, everythin is okay. makes you wonder alot.

      • Kangoocar says:

The moment you bring race into the subject, happens to make me NOT wonder at all, where you are coming from! Why don’t you do something useful, and actually research what Trump has done for all races, and compare it to the rack record of Obama and the democrat hopeful Clinton ? And you may be surprise to learn that Trump has done more than Obama and Clinton combined! I will give you a nudge in the direction you should be looking? Research black employment in and salary levels in the US, in 2007 and compare those same figures to 2016. Go on, do it!

  10. Navin Pooty Tang Johnson says:

Would not happen here as members of the LGBT community are not made to feel welcomed in BDA and are descriminated against even by the churches

    • Daylilly says:

NAVIN. During yesterday’s prayer vigil a group of churches took out time to sincerely pray for the victims and their families. Grouping all churches is discriminatory. Saying that a church doesn’t agree with someone’s way of life is not the same as saying a church doesn’t welcome someone because of their way of life.

If you don’t feel God’s love at one place try another. I am sure somewhere will welcome you; I know that God will welcome you.

      • Mike Hind says:

And yet YOU work constantly to discriminate!

        Amazing, the hypocrisy!

I can’t believe you would post this insanity.

  11. Wayne W says:

So quick to say Muslim or Islamic…..the murderer was a BORN AMERICAN!!….any life lost regardless or race, belief or sexuality is tragic and deplorable.

  12. Yes yes says:

Meanwhile in Bermuda there is a homophobic prayer vigil surrounding the House of Assembly.

    • HW says:

We specifically prayed for all the victims and their families actually. Every life is precious and we are all children of God.

    • Daylilly says:

YY. The prayer vigil actually was for something not against something. It was for the wisdom of the government, for the protection of our children, preservation of marriages and family, for the body of Christ to unite as one and stand and be counted and for the victims.

No prayer was done for fear or hate of any other person. Christian countries have consistently been at the forefront of human rights, even LGBT human rights. Preserving Marriage is not hating anyone. Why use this to promote lies.

      • Mike Hind says:

This is an outright lie, as usual.

Preserve Marriage and this prayer vigil were, in fact, against something… against allowing equal access to rights and privileges.

To pretend it isn’t is the height of dishonesty. Shame on you.

You are on the same side as this shooter. You should be ashamed of yourself.

  13. These lot …I believe…are in the care of Saint Peter.
They can be considered safe from any one who would harm them agaid, they are in fact Gods’children.

  14. Whistle-blower says:

    Bermudian living in Orlando.
This has been a very rough day/weekend for MANY of the citizens here.

Early Saturday morning a young artists (Christina Grimme) was killed after performing at a venue.

Sunday morning we wake to hear of this horrific act.

While saddened by both acts I am ashamed to hear such HATRED from Bermudians condoning this vile response to one mens displeasure of others lifestyle!!!!

Our city is devastated by what has taken place here!!!!!
Have some compassion for the families who have driven from other cities in Florida to await news of the fate of their loved one!!!!

  15. Say Whaat? says:

Worst mass shooting in RECENT history, not all of US history. #Rosewood #BlackWallStreet #WeRemember
