BWS: Tropical Storm Colin A “Potential Threat”

June 5, 2016

[Update: NHC has upgraded this to a Tropical Storm]

Tropical Depression Three has formed in the Atlantic and according to the Bermuda Weather Service it is a “potential threat to Bermuda,” with its closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hrs forecast to be 352 nm to the NNW at 2.00am on Wednesday, June 8th.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said, “Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph [55 km/h] with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast, and the Depression is expected to become a Tropical Storm before reaching the coast of Florida.”

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for the coast of Georgia and northeast Florida from Altahama Sound, Georgia to Flagler Beach, Florida.

If this Depression is upgraded to a Tropical Storm, it will be named “Colin” and will become the third named storm of the 2016 Atlantic Hurricane season.

According to Weather.com, “Getting to the ‘C’ storm in the Atlantic name list in June is exceedingly rare.

“Dating to the 1950s, when tropical cyclone name lists were first enacted, there have only been two other June Atlantic ‘C’ storms: Hurricane Chris [first a subtropical storm on June 18, 2012]. Tropical Storm Candy [briefly a tropical storm on June 23, 1968]

“This upcoming disturbance, then, if it becomes ‘Colin,’ would top the previous earliest Atlantic ‘C’ storm by at least 11 days,” Weather.com notes.

Update 8.54pm: The NHC has upgraded this to a Tropical Storm, with Tropical Storm Colin becoming the third named storm of the Atlantic season.

      Sage,
You are as predictable as the sun rising tomorrow. You might want to try silence the next time before you again expose your prejudice and ignorance. Unfortunately you have no monopoly on that though.
