Scale Model Of Proposed Airport Redevelopment
The Department of Airport Operations [DAO] recently unveiled a scale-model of the proposed redevelopment of Bermuda’s airport, which is currently located in the Departure Lounge near the United Airlines check in at the L. F. Wade International Airport.
The photos below were posted online by Aecon, who said, “We’re delighted to unveil the model for the proposed Airport Redevelopment Project. The model – which is built to scale – is on display in the Departures Hall at L.F. Wade International Airport. Please stop by and view it.”

Airport redevelopment is necessary but the price tag could be scaled by eliminating the water features, the airport is surrounded by beautiful water, and do we really need sidewalks built up in between parking spots?
One thing that is missing are solar panels. Look at the size of that roof, what a waste not to use that surface to harness the power of the sun to generate energy.
Totally agree about the water features. I have been saying that since they first released images of the project.
We have gorgeous views surrounding us, do we need to build to maintain these water features?! What a waste of our money that would be.
Agreed. The water feature(s) are not necessary. Besides they are expensive to run and maintain. After all, we don’t want another hospital scenario on our hands where the day to day air conditioning alone is simply not nor will it ever be affordable. I do believe they are looking into solar energy for the terminal so that would be a plus. Otherwise, LET’S GET ON WITH IT PLEASE! The PLP and their sheeple are just standing in the way of progress and frankly – it CLEAR to everyone – all they want is to postpone the deal so they can hand it over to their cronies. Then we can watch it go over budget.
If I understand what I have heard and read this is not a “water feature” as such. They will be the remnant of excavation to raise the level of the surrounding area and if done correctly would be maintenance free as the tidal rise and fall will continue to refresh the salt water.
A lot of what is there is fill – the US built the airport and runways just look at the shoreline around the airfield.
@ Susie….#1: Bermuda doesn’t have to put any money into this development. Please read what the Minister has been saying this whole time. People still aren’t listening.
And #2: a solar panel farm is being installed on “The Finger” of the runaway. There was a press release about it last week. Not sure if it’s going to supply the airport with electricity but it would make sense.
The more the project costs, the more revenue will we forgo in exchange, in line with the agreement. The less money spent, the more that we can negotiate better revenue sharing terms. So yes the final cost of the project absolutely does matter, and will have a direct impact on the finances of Bermuda, despite it not being “direct” expenditure.
Wow. You suddenly realise that nothing is free.
Are those water features or are they also to provide adequate drainage on land that has a tendency to flood?
So we’re arguing over water features now?
We currently owe in excess of $2 billion, our economy is 80% derived from international business, we are handing out hotel guarantees like we have a money printing press, the size of the civil service is out of control and we are borrowing money for day-to-day operations. No worries – our motto is Quo Fata Ferunt.
Where were you between 2007 and 2012?
Who cares, it’s now 2016….let’s look forward
Oh yeah….WHO CARES! That’s real fine reasoning. You can question the OBA til the ends of the earth but you don’t have the bravery to question the PLP.
Nice one. We’re doomed with that type of thinking.
Who cares. Wonderful.
It’s a good question because it exposes your hypocrisy.
COI?
Where do arriving passengers exit the building into an area where there are taxis and ground transport waiting to collect them ?
These models almost look like the front of the building is either all for departures OR it’s for departures and arrivals which would be a ball of confusion .
nope… one side for one and one for the other…. not rocket science… island in the middle looks like its for cabs i think? but a lot of small airports in intelligent countries to it this way, but I understand why it might seem confusing to we bermudians, especially after our morning elephant
Maybe if the PLP get in we can re-draw with a tin roof and some donkey carts outside.
The people of Bermuda have spoken, we don’t want it, plan and simple. When will government listen.
The people who actually have the whole picture – the engineers, the finance guys, the airlines, the tourism industry, and the staff of the airport all support it.
The people who don’t want it tend to believe the Oppositions lies and sustained campaign of misinformation.
You mean the 50 people who turn out every time?
but those 50 are the real Bermuda!!!! When will you people understand we dont want you on our island
No, we are the real Bermuda. And we don’t want you on our island.
ya de real old bermuda lmfao. ya still an expat like de rest of us
PLPers complain about Trump but then act like him any chance they get.
No different than the racist right of America who try and define what a ‘real American’ is.
Disgusting people you are.
What Double S. True story.
Real Americans are those who where there before Europeans landed.
Yeah… and real Bermudians are the ones who were here before the British came: none of us!
And for the record, my family has been here longer than yours so you should probably not start that nonsense.
And I bet my family worked a good bit off years for FREE so your family could be established and benefit undeserved privilege.
And who might they be? The NO,NO,NO crowd who showed up to disrupt information meetings, the few people who showed up at the airport gate one morning, the same few against it on the various forums, the same few parroting along on talk radio? Those few people? The same ones in every group?
It is going to be built. Get over it.
The same NO NO Crowd made you’re Dunk and his trolls re think the Immigration Status granting.
And because of actions like that is de reason why we celebrate Cup Match and Labour Day.
Mmmmmmmmm
lol… “The people of Bermuda”… needed that laugh…. you must be part of the PC… still think you represent “The People”…
SMH
Good comment ,by Susie,it is important that we receive good comment and suggestions from the public and then proceed based on the best research and ideas submitted ,price tag is so very important. If you snooze ,,,,you lose but also,,,,,,,haste makes waste, lets make this shot our best ever venture Bermuda.////Steady as she goes Bermuda.////Thanks Susie.Peace.
So you agree that (a) we do in fact need a new airport, and (b) we should generally not waste money.
Finally.
What is this? an airport for ants?!?
Not funny the first time posted. Not funny this time either.
Ok, I’ll try again.
What is this? an airport for ants?!?
How are we expected to catch our flights if we can’t even fit in the building!
The airport has to be at least… THREE TIMES BIGGER THAN THIS!
It is truly remarkable how many people do not listen & do not read. The why there are water features in the first place has been made public long ago. There are still people bleating away about the design of the building. Save for minor changes which always happen in projects, this is what the terminal is going to look like.
What makes anyone in Bermuda think that they have any idea of what it takes to build a modern small terminal that has to perform all of the functions of an international terminal complete with local & US imigration & customs?
The what it is & how it will pay for itself is all set except for minor details. I don’t know how far past start date we are now but the more the delay the more the costs will be.
It will be 3 years between start date & the first aircraft rolls up to a gate. Meanwhile the old decrepid building leaks & falls apart.
Bob The Builder, get on with building. Ignore the yappy little dogs nipping at your heels telling you that you are all wrong. They ignored you & told you that you were wrong before. Look who was right! Because they ignored you it has to be financed the way it is.
Small point – but where is the Bermuda Flag? They have painstakingly small models of US, Canada, UK and even United Nations flag, and a flag in the middle that looks like Fiji, but no Bermuda flag! If you can’t get the small details right, beware of the big ones.
Probably none because Canada will own the airport, not in-debt-to-our-grand-childrens’-eyeballs Bermuda.
You are truly a wonder woman, I am still wondering about you.
I’m a wonder, wonder woman…. sung to the melody of that show’s theme song.
