Video: PLP Response To Premier’s Message

August 8, 2016

[Acting Opposition Leader David Burt’s response to National Address by Premier Dunkley]

“Good Evening,

“For too many Bermudian families, the promise of change and economic turnaround remains unfulfilled.

“The reality of life for hardworking Bermudian families is stagnant wages, and seniors in their families choosing between healthcare and food. For too many Bermudians, jobs are hard to find and, more frequently, many believe that they must leave the land of their birth for opportunity.

“We no longer hear about shared sacrifice because only the people have been forced to sacrifice, as the current government grants concessions to business while Bermudian jobs disappear.

“Nothing crystallizes the ‘concessions to business’ approach of the current government better than the airport privatisation, where Bermuda will pay Aecon’s electricity bill for 30 years while Aecon earns a taxpayer guaranteed return of 16%.

“Meanwhile, our children attend crumbling public schools and Bermudians struggle to pay their monthly power bills while earning less than 1% interest at local banks.

“The Premier praised his government’s record on seniors; however, our seniors are paying more for food and healthcare, while their first pension increase in 5 years didn’t even keep up with inflation. Our seniors are not ‘further protected’ as the Premier said – they are worse off.

“The Premier and his supporters have convinced themselves that they have a communications problem. They might. But more importantly, they have a policy problem.

“Their policies are bad for Bermudian families and no amount of PR or national addresses will change that. Bermuda doesn’t need a government that communicates better – it needs a government that has better policies to communicate to Bermudians.

“The reality is that we are rapidly approaching an election and the people will have a choice to make. The Opposition has spent the last four years learning from our mistakes in government, listening to the people, and working every day on their behalf to hold this government accountable. We will be a government that consults before it acts and focuses on meeting the needs of all the people.

“We have a plan, Vision 2025, to position Bermuda and Bermudians to meet the challenges of the rapidly changing global economy. As a people, we can work together to reform our education system, empower Bermudian entrepreneurs, and to build a diversified 21st century economy that works for all.”

It took the people of Bermuda to stop you

    No one has forgotten you

    • Wahoo says:

      Reddy??

      ??

    • C James says:

Neither has anyone forgotten the debt that plp put us in. Be a cold day in hell before I vote green.

      • John Lenndon says:

Imagine what we could do for the people of this country of the honest members of your party would just come forward and explain where the eight hundred million dollars that went missing during the PLP reign in power is.

      • Ringmaster says:

So all the PLP can come up with is a “vision”, no actual ways to employ or generate employment for Bermudians, that is 9 years ahead. The OBA, while not perfect has been in Government for 4 years trying to correct the mistakes and legacy of the PLP, yet the PLP says give us 9 years while we think up what we should do? You can’t make this up.

I can imagine the next election though and the PLP wins. The first comment will be WTFDWDN.

  2. voting troll says:

well no way in hell I vote green… and the only reason I might vote for the present gov is to keep the alternative out,. either way we scrxxd the only difference is how much.

  3. Madge says:

David Burt, we have had enough of your arrogant attitude….and so has some of your party members.
I have heard that the P.L.P.may no longer be in existance !!!!!

  4. Onion says:

The PLP caused the recession and maximised its duration with their bad policies and deficits and now they want to lecture others?!

    The hypocrisy boggles the mind.

    • john says:

the plp cause the recession for the world cause it wasn’t just in bermuda. u people r something. we all no d next election will b a a plp by 10 seats worst defeat ever thanks to the 2 david’s

      • Zevon says:

The rest of the world was out of recession within 12-15 months. Bermuda was in recession for 7 years. The PLP was unable to get us out of recession. Those ate the pesky facts.

  5. Point boy says:

Yup Mr Burt we have all heard it already. I also know that talk is cheap.
You been saying the same things over and over since you lost the last election.

  6. Al says:

The most ineffective opposition of modern times.

  7. MaddogYou says:

You spoke well David Burt…you are a confident young BLACK MAN!!!!!

    • William F.G Bird says:

Whoopee, I’m so impressed. Why is the message coming out nearly two weeks after the game? Did it take that long to think up the reply?

    • Chaos Theory says:

Just because your are a confident black man does not make you right, and that is clearly the case here.

    • hmmm says:

The Truest Characters of IGNORANCE are vanity, pride and arrogance.

  8. Kevin says:

when will they at least admit they screwed up …like an alcoholic there is no future unless you come to terms with your past flaws
only then will we believe you may have changed

    • Truth is ....... says:

      My sentiments excatly !!!!

    • interesting says:

Not a fan of Burt but in fairness they have acknowledged before that they made mistakes.

      • Just the Tips says:

Sorry when have they done that and on what topics??

      • Build a Better Bermuda says:

No they did not, they said they made mistakes, but they continue to ignore what those mistakes actually were. They lost an election, and their attempt to seek forgiveness by saying, we made mistakes… their mistakes were monumental policy mistakes that drove higher the unemployment numbers in the country in decades. So grave were those policy mistakes that they damaged this country’s ability to finance itself and sustainably support its people. And they have promised to do those mistakes again, so no, they have not apologized for their mistakes because they don’t actually understand what they were and how they have lead us to where we are now. As much as the OBA has made mistakes, at least they understand how to create a government that might one day sustain its people and are willing to deal with the reality that right now it can’t… and that is in no small part due to the PLP.

  9. Jus' Wonderin' says:

Guess they finally caught up after de holiday lmfao!

  10. Navin Johnson says:

    Ho hum.

  11. takbir Sharrieff says:

Bermuda must accept that we,,,,all, dropped the ball,P.L.P. leadership ,and O.B.A.leadership……Yes it is true P.L.P. will transition into Peoples Liberation Party, Independence will be sought after, and White ,versus Black leadership ,must be done away with and replaced with ,,,,,Bermudian ,,,,,Leadership.Whether Portuguese,West Indian ,Background,or European Ancestry ,or any other Ethnic, group.Bermuda must be the primary consideration.Privelige based on Ethniticity, will fade into the background ,and birthright nationality will take center stage ,as we move on,and up.Peace.

the sitting premier makes a cup match speech each year…the end. No need for any response at all, very crass in my opinion

  13. Zevon says:

Makes you wonder why they whine every time a job creation initiative is announced.

  14. Informed Bermudian says:

The more I hear this mans rhetoric and lack of substance the less I believe he needs to be involved in government again. Did he not learn his lesson as Jr Minister of Finance under the Cog? BURT GO HOME

  15. Oh,I see now says:

The only reason if any the OBA stays in power is because Bermuda may trust the opposition less. The OBA has made some strides but at a terrible cost to low wage earners. We Bermudians are all in this together concessions must swing the full length of the pendulum.
Forwhom the bell tolls is an expression from a sermon by John Donne. Donne says that because we are all part of mankind, any person’s death is a loss to all of us: “Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”

    • smh says:

Oh,I see now….the low wage earners are suffering mainly because of the failed policies that were put in that drove thousands and their business from our shores. The blame needs to lie with the people that caused the problem in the first place to deny that is to try and rewrite history

  16. YOUNGBermudian says:

Every time this guy speaks I cringe at the thought that its a SAD day in Bermuda if this is your only other option for change..Will never Vote PLP again Im struggling now because of Your Green Gov stupid mistakes….

  17. Unbelievable says:

The PLP in full-on election mode.

  18. takbir Sharrieff says:

Young Bermudian,,,,,,,,the only reason you are struggling ,you stove pipe-legged, pointed toe shoe, pads in the shoulder, sucker ,is because you and your generation do not want to ,cut grass, paint roofs, sweep and mop floors, wash dishes, and work like your generations before you did. You feel priviledged and want everything handed to you on a silver platter. Knuckle down and work sucker. ,,,Hard work—-makes the dream work,,,, ,Sucker,,,,.Peace.

  19. What’s this?

    Are you shipping me?

You are the ones got us selling share of a bank in U.S.
And the ones got us conceding control of an airport to Canadians.

We owe them because of you borrowing and spending.

You went nuts spending on candy…when I think of you lot I still shake my head.

  20. Mary says:

the Unprogressive Party with NO solutions , this party supports inequality for Bermudians plain and simple.

  21. Unbelievable says:

Also like how they used OBA colours for the graphics.

  22. San George says:

They have a one seat majority. The Speaker has a one and done; he gone. We don’t have national elections; it’s all regional. We don’t vote for the Premier, he is appointed by his party members. I don’t vote for inequality.

  23. Onion Juicy says:

An apology from the plp would go a long way, but we won’t get one, they are too arrogant.

  24. Dependent says:

Only the brainwashed fools would vote for the green team!

  25. aceboy says:

It has taken you this long to respond to the Premier’s Cup Match message? Seriously? Then you do so with visions and a total lack of substance? You byes need to just sit down while then big boys try and deal with the mess you created.

  26. tired of the same says:

I’ve watched this three times and still don’t get it. What does this man have to offer us voters?

  27. JUNK YARD DOG says:

The People of this island gave you an education, which, we paid for with our taxes. What you did with that education is your business.
