Cycling: Oliveira Wins Final Season Road Race
Matthew Oliveira of Winners Edge cycle team continued to demonstrate strong form as he won Sunday’s final Bermuda Bicycle Association Road Race of the season.
The Adult A race was fought over a 40-mile course in the east end parishes which saw the field climb up Flatts Hill and through St. Mark’s Road six times during the race. Oliviera flatted on the first climb but was able to continue with a teammate’s wheel and chase back to the race.
The trio of Oliviera, with junior teammate Kaden Hopkins [Winners Edge], and Dave McComas [Team Tokio] broke from the field in the final laps with McComas finishing second, a half-second behind Oliviera, after the final sprint.
On slick roads, the Adult B race saw an early crash on lap one that split the field. Robin Horsefield, who recently represented Bermuda in the 2016 Mountain Bike Championships in St. Maarten, was forced to chase back to the field and joined a break with Jonah Jones [Team Tokio]. The pair held of the chasing pack in the final laps with Horsefield breaking for the win.
Garth Fleming lead the Adult C race over the line with powerful final sprint to hold off Sergio Edness and Conor White [WinnersEdge]. The top 9 finishers in Adult C were all within 6 seconds of the winner.
In the Women’s race, the trio of Ashley Estwanik, junior Tristan Narraway [Team Tokio], and Sarah Bonnett [Team Madison] lead for a good portion of the race. Estwanik made a break for the finish in the closing laps as the field closed in on the remaining pair. Rose-Anna Hoey [Team Madison] was able to draw back the pair and take second, with Bonnett holding on to third place.
In junior racing, Caleb Ingham [Team Tokio] was able to hold off Tommy Marshall for the win, with Liam Flannery taking third place in the Junior A division. In Junior C, Manning Smith [Bermuda Cycling Academy] held on over Megan Hands [WinnersEdge] and Zoe Hasselkuss [Team Tokio].
The final race of the season is next week in St. Davids before everyone looks towards the winter cyclocross series beginning on October 30 and the FTM mountain bike series beginning on November 6.
