Bermuda Swimmers Set New National Records
Bermuda swimmers recently competed in the 13th FINA Short Course World Championships in Windsor, Ontario, finishing the meet with four new national records set, including three by Julian Fletcher and one by Rebecca Heyliger.
Mr. Fletcher told Bernews, “We had myself and Rebecca Heyliger competing in three events each over the six day period.
“On the first day, I lowered the 100 Breast national record to 1:01.56, but finished 55th missing the semi-final. Also the 50m split in the race was a national record at 28.33, which previously stood at 28.50.
“On day two, Rebecca, currently training with a club team in Denmark, swam the 100 Free and finished 46th in 56.15.
“On day three, I swam the 100 IM and broke a 13 year old national record with a time of 59.15, the record was previously held by local legend Graham Smith at 59.70. Rebecca swam the 50 Fly, finishing 46th in 28.43.
“On day five, Rebecca swam the 50 Free, finishing 40th and setting a national record at 25.79, which she tied from her race at Danish Nationals in November. Julian swam the 50 Breast in 28.42, just off the national record from his split in the 100. He finished 54th.
“Overall, Bermuda had a great performance at the World Championships in Canada. The meet was highlighted with Katinka Hosszu [HUN] winning seven gold and two silver, earning her ‘female swimmer of the meet.’
“On the men’s side, Chad Le Clos [RSA] won the swimmer of the meet with his three gold and one silver medal performance, which included a world record in the 100 Fly touching at 48.08.”
