Safer Internet Day To Be Held On February 22

February 16, 2017

The third annual Safer Internet Day will be hosted by the Department of E-Commerce at Cathedral Hall on Church Street on Wednesday, February 22, from 10.30am to 1.30pm.

The free event is sponsored by Clarien Bank, and is specifically geared towards the island’s seniors; the aim of Safer Internet Day is “to advise of the many ways to stay safe online.”

A spokesperson said, “Although the use of the Internet and related technologies is increasingly convenient and prolific, so are its dangers. Many scams specifically target senior citizens.

“On Safer Internet Day, visitors will interact with professionals from the Cybertips team, the Bermuda Police Service, social media expert Stephanie Lee, and the Bermuda National Library, who, together with major sponsor Clarien, will share tips and tricks on how to safely enjoy the many benefits that technology brings.

“Director of E-Commerce Dr. Marisa Stones noted that Safer Internet Day was a Cybertips initiative.

“She said her team draws from the Bermuda Police Service, other public and private authorities, and many committed community partners from the profit and non-profit sectors.

“The priority of Cybertips is to uphold the safe use of the Internet by students, educators, seniors, and the general public.”

Dr. Stones said, “The Cybertips team has been hard at work, actively reaching into the community and encouraging more deliberate thought about, and adoption of, safer Internet practices on the Island.”

A Clarien Bank spokesperson said, “The online security of our clients is of utmost importance. We are proud to partner with the Department of E-Commerce for Safer Internet Day and encourage our senior clients and the greater community to be vigilant against fraudulent online activity.

“We look forward to sharing additional cyber tips and answering questions during the event to help foster a more secure online environment and reduce instances of scams and phishing.”

To register for the free event, email e-commerce@gov.bm or call 294-2774.
